DENSITY SODA CANS
7
MASS – the amount of matter an object has – Base unit is kilogram – Use a scale
8
WEIGHT – Measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object – Its value can change depending upon location
9
VOLUME Definition – the amount of space an object occupies
10
VOLUME – LIQUID MEASUREMENT Liquid - put into a liquid measuring device (such as a graduated cylinder) and the amount seen is the measured value
11
VOLUME – SOLID MEASUREMENT Regular shaped solid – can be determined by using the volume formula for the shape – Rectangular box: V=lwh – Cube: V=s 3 – Cylinder: V=πr 2 h – Sphere: V=4/3 πr 3
12
VOLUME SOLID MEASUREMENT (2) Irregular shaped solid – Water displacement Take the volume measurement of water in a container Add the irregular shaped solid and take the new measurement Take the difference to get the volume of the solid
13
DENSITY Definition – the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance D = mass/volume = m/V
14
Density Example Density of the regular coke can: – What is the mass? – What is the volume? – Calculate the density
15
The Data Comparison of: Classic Coke Diet Coke 355 mL Water = 355 g Sugar = 39 g Sugar = 0 g Nutra Sweet = 0 gNutra Sweet = 0.1g Tot. Mass = 394 gTot. Mass = 355.1 g
