3 Benjamin Franklin- Author, publisher, inventor and diplomat Bill of Rights- First 10 amendments added to the U.S Constitution

4 Carney, William- First African American awarded the Medal of Honor, held the flag at Fort, Wagner Calhoun, John C.- Doctrine o nullification which said that a state could decide if a law was constitutional

5 Declaration of Independence- written by Thomas Jefferson Davis, Jefferson- Pres.Confederate States of America

6 Early Republic- A. Hamilton increased taxes in order to improve the national transportation system Elizabeth Cady Stanton- Author of the declaration of the rights of women

7 Federalist Party- Believe in strong national government; higher tariffs Fugitive Slave Act- Act that helped slave owners recover their runaway slaves from the North.

8 Gibbons v. Ogden (1824)- said that federal government had the power to regulate trade between states. George Washington- Commander-in-chief of the continental army

9 Henry David Thoreau- American essayist, poet, wrote “Civil Disobedience” Horace Mann- Father of Public Education; believed all children had the right to free education

10 Individual Rights- first 10 amendments of the constitution protect individual rights against the power of the government. Important Leaders- Federalist-John Adams and Alexander Hamilton Anti-Federalist- Thomas Jefferson and James Madison

11 Jamestown- Founded in 1607- first permanent colony John Paul Jones- founder of the U.S Navy, led raids on British ships

12 Kansas-Nebraska Act- All were examples of the government compromises that actually spread slavery further in the country. King George 3- King of England during the American Revolution

13 Limited Government- Placed strict limits on government to protect the people. Lincoln, Abraham- Pres. United States during Civil War

14 Morse, Samuel- Inventor of the telegraph Morrill Act- Land grant that established agricultural- universities (Texas A & M)

15 Nullification Compromise- Henry Clay’s compromise to end the nullification crisis when the tariff would be lowered over a 10- year period Northwest Ordinance- Established government for the Northwest Territory and described how a territory becomes a state.

16 Override- To overturn or defeat, as a bill proposed in Congress Otis, James- Young lawyer in Boston

17 Property Rights- the right to own property. Protective tariffs- taxes on imported goods that are designed to help the U.S. companies compete in the sale of goods.

18 Quebec- the capital of new France. John Quincy Adams- 6 th president, member of Congress favored strong nationalism against states rights.

19 Republican party- modern republican party formed before the civil war as an anti-slavery party, Lincoln first republican president. Robert E. Lee- confederate general- commanded the northern army of Virginia.

20 Sojourner Truth- former slave who fought for women’s rights and abolition of slavery. Siege of Vicksburg- important Union Victory. Confederate lost control of the Mississippi river.

21 Trail of tears- forced on this trail after Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830 into law. Transcontinental Railroad- railroad line that linked the well developed railway network of the East Coast with rapidly growing California.

22 Ulysses S. Grant- commanding union army- won major victories for the union-defeat Lees troops in Virginia and accepted Lees surrender at the Appomattox court house in 1865 Unalienable Rights- rights that cannot be taken away by the government.

23 Virtue- the quality of what is right and avoid what is wrong. Virginia plan- the Virginia Plan, each state would have a different number of representatives based on the states population.

24 Whitney, Eli- invented the cotton gin. William Blackstone- gave the first university lectures on English Common Law.

25 XYF- John Adams

26 Yorktown- last major battle of the war.

27 Zenger, John Peter- journalist, his trial helped establish idea of freedom of the press.
