Cerebral Palsy What constitutes cerebral palsy? ◦ ‘a group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitation, that is attributed to non-progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain. The motor disorders of cerebral palsy are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behavior, by epilepsy, and by secondary musculoskeletal problems.’ [1] Limitations of cerebral Palsy [2]
3
Background Conventional Rehabilitation options ◦ Physiotherapy [3] ◦ Occupational therapy [4] ◦ Speech pathology [5] ◦ Orthopaedic musculoskeletal surgery Game Rehabilitation ◦ Motivation Rewards and gratifications ◦ Long-Term Hand Tele-Rehabilitation on the PlayStation 3 [6] ◦ Improve motor function (max ROM) ◦ Sensory rehabilitation
4
Objective Aim ◦ Create 3 motivational rehabilitation games using XNA 4.0 Focus on sensory interactions ◦ Age group between 5-15, children with CP Constraints and considerations ◦ Limited control (joystick only, no in-game buttons) ◦ Difficulty ◦ Intuitive ◦ Motivational, fun, engaging (replayability) ◦ Rating(G) ◦ Sensory feedback
5
Research Intuitive and motivational game design, with limited interactive control for the purpose of sensatory rehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy. ◦ Is it possible to make intuitive games given limited control? ◦ If so how? ◦ Appropriately use tactile sensatory feedback? ◦ How to create motivational games?
6
Evaluation Do the games meet all the project’s objectives? ◦ Sensatory ◦ Data collection ◦ Age group 5-15 (Able bodied) Special joystick Experienced The level of user Engagement ◦ Motivational ◦ Playability ◦ Intuitive ◦ Difficulty ◦ Commercial vs. custom games
