In the First Reading box, write 3 questions. Aim for one of each of the types listed below:
Interpretive Questions: get at the text’s deeper meaning and themes. They have more than one good answer that can be supported by the text.
Ex: Why does Renate let Hanna try to cure her leg?
Speculative Questions: ask about information that exists outside the text, but readers must use their imagination.
Ex: Will Harrison’s parents ever think about their son again?
Evaluative Questions: go beyond the text and call for the reader’s personal opinions.
Ex: Should the mother have tried harder to send the narrator to the first school?

During the second reading, pay attention to the questions and make notations in the text where you see possible answers.

The overall quality of the discussion
Group behavior: even participation, pulling people in, good manners
Exploration of new ideas and ability to push each other’s thinking.
