Domain/Kingdom/Phylum Review

Review Instructions:  During the actual review, you may not use any notes or your book  You may keep your project description out for reference  Right now:  Discuss/review each domain/kingdom/phylum with your group. 3 min.  During the review  Write your answer on the provided white board.  Students not participating or wasting time drawing on the boards - 1 point from your project score each time

Which of the following is the correct scientific name of an organism in the Protist kingdom?  A) Acetabularia calyculus  B) Acetabularia calyculus  C) Acetabularia Calyculus  D) Acetabularia Calyculus It’s B! To which domain of prokaryotes are you most closely related?  Archaea How are animals and plants different? Give at least 2 characteristics.  Plants – have cell walls, photosynthetic  Animals – no cell wells, heterotrophic Which eukaryotic phyla are autotrophic (3 from this project)?  Chlorophyta, Anthophyta, Coniferophyta

Review Describe the main characteristics of kingdom Fungi.  Heterotrophic, have cell walls usually containing chitin How do fungi feed?  Many use enzymes to extracellularly digest decaying material; others are parasites on living organisms How do plants reproduce, generally? Sexually or asexually?  Sexually (with plenty of asexual exceptions) What are protists? Define the kingdom.  Unicellular (or, if multicellular, usually show no real tissue differentiation), eukaryotic, may have properties of both plant and animal (or fungal) kingdoms; don’t fit elsewhere very well.  They are NOT prokaryotic! Excluding protists, which eukaryotic kingdom(s) have cell walls?  Fungi, Plants

Review You studied two phyla in the fungi kingdom: Basidiomycota and Zygomycota. What type of organisms are included in these phyla (give a basic example of each type)?  Basidomycota: Shitake mushrooms (Lentinus edode)  Zygomycota: Bread mold (genus Rhizopus) What are chordates? Describe the kingdom they belong to and at least 2 basic characteristics.  Animal kingdom: pharyngeal gill slits, notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, tail How do animals typically reproduce? Sexually or asexually?  Sexually How do prokaryotes reproduce?  Asexually (binary fission)

Review What are the three domains?  Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya How are the two prokaryotic domains different?  Peptidoglycan in cell walls (related to evolutionary history) What are Zoomastigina and Chlorophyta, and how are they different in general?  Protists; Zoomastigina are “animal-like” protists (often have flagella that allow them to move); Chlorophyta are “plant-like” protists that include green algae (simple uni or multicellular organisms that photosynthesize but don’t have much/any differentiated tissue) Describe the main characteristics of plant phylum Anthophyta.  Flowering plants; produce a seed surrounded by a fruit/ovary through sexual reproduction

Review Describe the main characteristics of animal phylum Arthropoda.  Segmented body  Exoskeleton (hard outer shell)  Jointed appendages (e.g. legs with joints) Describe the main characteristics of plant phylum Coniferophyta.  Plants that bear seeds without any fruit (“naked seeds”)

Review - Honors Describe the main characteristics of animal phylum Cnidaria. Describe the main characteristics of animal phylum Porifera. Describe the main characteristics of animal phylum Mollusks. Describe the main characteristics of animal phylum Echinoderms.
