Seismic database Network Access Point Paolo Diviacco Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale pdiviacco@.ogs.trieste.it
2
Peculiarities of this data type, that do not fit the current paradigms File size Sensitivity Divergence from the GIS conceptual framework network traffic visualization

Commercial systems exist but have several side effects from a Scientific Research point of view 1.Very expensive 2.Prescriptive 3.Complex data structure 4.Need professional data manager 5.Proprietary standards and codes (cannot be distributed)
5
Seismic Data: - remains within the server - processed within server - sends to the client only jpg, png, gif Positioning: - sent to the client (SVG) - Rendered by the client Mixed Server side-client side paradigm (Data access control) Based on opensource software only (PHP, Apache…)
6
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphycs) XML dialect that handles vectorial images (W3C standard == open-source) objects remain objects (a road is not just some pixels in a bitmap) objects can have “attributes” (like a name or a web link) Objects can have “methods” (if I hover on an object something happens: e.g. the object’s name pops up somewhere) Maps can be Interactive Zoom without pixellation Pan Vectorial: Rendered in your PC: Light-speed zoom, pan and web link

MetadataMetadata + Data Metadata + Interact with Data Ease Data quality Serendipity !

Advantages: Protect intellectual property Version Control Smart Server-side caching system Reduces network traffic Resource consolidation Easy maintenance

What is a Data Discovery Portal (DDP):: It is a tool to find information in a distributed system In our view it is a tool to foster collaborative attitude getting together data owner and seeker Problematisation: define the problem Interessement: find people interested Enrolment: enrole them Mobilisation of allies: ask for active support DDP Mutual benefit Data access control MetaSNAP SNAP Network Aggregator
