3.  Incline  In (in, into) + clin  Literal definition – lean into  Dictionary definition – (v) to be inclined to/toward/to do something – to feel willing to do something; to have a tendency to do something; to lead or turn away from a given plane or direction, especially the vertical or horizontal; (n) a slope on a road, path, or railway  Our bus had a hard time making it up the steep incline because it was so big and heavy.

4.  Recline  Re (back) + clin  Literal definition – bend back, lean back  Dictionary definition – (v) to lean or lie back in a relaxed position with back support; to be able to have the back moved into a sloping position  The chair reclines so that you can take a nap.

5.  Include  In (in, into) + clud  Literal definition – shut in, close in  Dictionary definition – (v) to contain as part of a whole; to allow someone to share in an activity or privilege  Does the price include the cost of the airline tickets?

6.  Reclusive  Re (back, again) + clus + ive (capable of)  Literal definition – capable of shutting in  Dictionary definition – (adj) avoiding the company of other people; solitary  Emily Dickinson lead an extremely reclusive life; she rarely left her house or made public appearances.

7.  Seclude  Se (away, apart) + clud  Literal definition – shut away, close away  Dictionary definition – (v) to remove or set apart from others  We secluded the tiger from the other animals because it might have attacked them if they had been left together.

8.  Abduct  Ab (away) + duct  Literal definition – lead away  Dictionary definition – (v) to take someone away illegally by force; to kidnap  The child was abducted, but luckily, the police were able to find him.

9.  Conducive  Con (together, with) + duc + ive (capable of)  Literal definition – capable of leading together  Dictionary definition – (adj) making a certain situation or outcome likely to happen or possible  My kitchen is not a conducive environment for studying because there are too many distractions.

10.  Reduction  Re (back, again) + duct + ion (act of)  Literal definition – act of leading back  Dictionary definition – (n) the action of making something smaller or less in amount, degree, or size  A reduction in the price of the house enabled us to buy it.

11.  Emergency  E (out) + merg + y (result of)  Literal definition – result of plunging out  Dictionary definition – (n) a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation that requires immediate action  We practice evacuating our building in case there is an actual emergency.

12.  Merge  Dictionary definition – (v) to unite or combine to form one thing  When the two companies merged together, some employees had to be relocated to a different state.

13.  Submersible  Sub (under) + mers + ible (able)  Literal definition – able to dip under  Dictionary definition – (adj) designed to be completely under water; (n) a vehicle designed to stay and operate under water  James Cameron’s submersible recently made a trip to the Mariana Trench, which is more than a mile deep.

14.  Demise  De (down, away) + mis  Literal definition – send away, send down  Dictionary definition – (n) death; the end or failure of something  The constant arguing signaled the start of their relationship’s demise.

15.  Emit  E (out) + mit  Literal definition – send out  Dictionary definition – (v) to produce or discharge something such as radiation  Stay away from the burning chemical factory because it is emitting toxic fumes.

16.  Intermittent  Inter (between) + mitt + ent (characteristic of)  Literal definition – characteristic of sending between  Dictionary definition – (adj) not continuous or steady; stopping and starting again  The intermittent rain was enough to force us to call off the game.
