SSR when you finish DO NOW: COMPLETE VOCAB PRACTICE #1

1.Kara felt alienated when everyone around her was speaking Spanish so she couldn’t understand what they were saying. 2.Because of immigration, the United States of America is a country made up of people with many diverse cultures and traditions. 3.In order to become more assimilated to the Chinese culture, Hector began listening to Chinese music, eating Chinese food, and learning the Chinese language. 4.Bill emigrated from the Ukraine to the United States in search of better opportunities. I will now call on four people to share their usage of the remaining terms. Let’s listen closely to help each other correct our usage if we are not quite right. VOCAB ANSWERS

On your CW, respond to these questions about yesterday’s class. Be sure to put today’s date so you remember what each page of your notebook is related to. 1.What is a vignette? 2.Why do authors use vignettes? 3.“I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn’t it. The house on Mango Street isn’t it. For the time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa. But I know how those things go” (Cisneros 5). a. What occurred to cause the narrator to say this? b. What can be inferred about the narrator’s living experiences based on this quote? REVIEW FROM YESTERDAY

 Why would Sandra Cisneros write the passage this way: “I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn’t it. The house on Mango Street isn’t it. For the time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa. But I know how those things go” (Cisneros 5).  …but not write in this way? I was exceptionally clear that my current occupancy was not sufficient. A more permanent dwelling was a necessity. My parents assured me that the house on Mango Street would only be impermanent.  What is the effect of the first passage versus the second one? AN AUTHOR’S CHOICES

 Diction is the choice and use of words in a piece of writing.  Authors use words to convey tone and meaning.  How was diction different in each of the previous examples?  So again…What is the effect of the first passage versus the second one?  By choosing different words, writers create different experiences for the reader. The first example helps the reader to see Esperanza as a young girl while the second example would make her much older and more difficult to relate to. DICTION: WORD CHOICE

 The author or speakers attitude toward a topic. Tone is determined by the connotation of the words chosen.  DO NOT confuse tone with mood. Mood is the feeling created for the reader, while tone is the feeling of the writer.  Tone may be formal, informal, playful, serious, ironic, condescending, or many other possible attitudes. TONE: FEELING IN THE WORDS

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxw5aprXK4M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxw5aprXK4M  After watching, evaluate the actor’s diction and tone.  What is the effect of the ways the words are used? AT SPRINT, EVERYTHING IS IMPORTANT

Turn to the vignette “Louie, His Cousin, & His Other Cousin” After reading the first paragraph 1, reread the sentence that includes the phrase “T-shirts never stay tucked in” Why does Cisneros use these words? What is the speaker’s tone (attitude) toward Louie? Continue reading the vignette SILENTLY and annotate for diction (word choice) and tone (author’s attitude). You will share one annotation each for diction and tone with your group when the timer goes off in 6 minutes. PRACTICE WITH TEXT

 You will have four minutes to share in your groups – one minute per person.  Your sharing should including a finding for both diction and your understanding of tone  Two people will then be selected to share on the Elmo as the class evaluates its own work against the two examples presented. GROUP EVALUATION

 Complete Independent Practice/Exit Slip after reading “Those Who Don’t”  It is due at the end for class for a grade  You may start your HW at a level zero when you finish INDEPENDENT PRACTICE - EXIT SLIP
