I was exceptionally clear that my current occupancy was not sufficient. A more permanent dwelling was a necessity. 5.  Diction is the choice and use of words in a piece of writing.  Authors use words to convey tone and meaning.  How was diction different in each of the previous examples?  So again…What is the effect of the first passage versus the second one?  By choosing different words, writers create different experiences for the reader. The first example helps the reader to see Esperanza as a young girl while the second example would make her much older and more difficult to relate to. DICTION: WORD CHOICE

6.  The author or speakers attitude toward a topic. Tone is determined by the connotation of the words chosen.  DO NOT confuse tone with mood. Mood is the feeling created for the reader, while tone is the feeling of the writer.  Tone may be formal, informal, playful, serious, ironic, condescending, or many other possible attitudes. TONE: FEELING IN THE WORDS
