The minimum word level is 500 words and the maximum limit is 1000 words. You MUST not exceed the limit and will be penalised if you do. You must also note the number of words at the end of your essay. The word count does not include: titles, footnotes and a list of sources (bibliography), but must include any quotations. Your final version should be word-processed or neatly handwritten. Only one side of the paper should be used. It should have the following: standard font such as Calibri or Arial font size 12 alignment: left or justified margins: 2cm all round line spacing: 2 Footnotes Page numbers print colour: black

Your essay should be structured in the following way: Your name should be in the top left hand corner of the first page Essay question should be centred below your name Take a new line for a new paragraph Page numbers in the bottom right corner Footnotes in bottom left corner Word count below conclusion Bibliography on separate page

Your essay needs weighty evidence to convince/persuade your readers. You need to include facts, statistics and quotes from people who are knowledgeable on the subject you are writing about. If you include a fact like “there are more homosexual adoptions now than ever before” then you need a footnote for this even though you have not quoted here. If you do not include a footnote then that is just your opinion which (sorry to be harsh but) is not worth very much. Similarly if you include a statistic: “90 % of first years reported being victims of bullying” Again if you include a quote you need a footnote: “England is being overtaken by other leading nations because our progress on Literacy has been overtaken.” Note the order for books – author, title, publisher, place of publication, edition (year of publication), pages referred to. Websites should include the FULL web address and the date you accessed it. Newspapers should state the title, the name of the article, the journalists name and the date it was published in the paper.
