Milestone? a stone by the side of a road that shows the distance in miles to a specified place an important point in the progress or development of something : a very important event or advance 1662 8/27/201528

A NEW Assessment System Georgia Milestones Assessment System Please do NOT refer to them as GMAS – no acronyms, please. Call them Georgia Milestones. 8/27/201529 Georgia Milestones will consist of both end of grade (EOG) and end of course (EOC) measures.

Georgia Milestones Comprehensive Single program, not series of tests (e.g. CRCT, EOCT, WA); formative assessment tools to compliment summative Coherent Consistent expectations and rigor to position Georgia students to compete with peers nationally and internationally Consistent signal about student preparedness for the next level, be it the next grade, course, or college/career Consistent signal about student achievement both within system (across grades and courses) and with external measures (NAEP, PSAT, SAT, ACT) Consolidate Combine reading, language arts, and writing into a single measure to align to the standards. 8/27/201530

Georgia Milestones Grades 3-8 – End of Grade (EOG) in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies High School – End of Course (EOC) in 9 th Grade Literature & Composition, American Literature & Comprehension, Coordinate Algebra, Analytic Geometry, Physical Science, Biology, US History, and Economics 8/27/201531

Our Assessment Landscape Is Changing Assessment development is a process, not an event – As such, some components may need to be rolled-out in stages Georgia is transitioning from a set of long-standing, mature programs – Districts, schools, students, parents, and the public are familiar with and know what to expect This transition provides Georgia with an opportunity – However, as with any change, there will be periods of uncertainty and discomfort 8/27/201532

“Here’s To the Teacher” by Dr. John Barge, State School Superintendent “Currently, the state of Georgia ranks higher nationally than it ever has in state history in SAT scores, ACT scores, and continues to see the number of students passing AP exams increase; and we are graduating more seniors with some of the highest expectations in the nation to earn a high school diploma!” 8/27/201536

8/27/201537 In 2012, Georgia was the only state in the nation to raise student achievement on every national test administered consistently across the U.S. Currently, Georgia ranks 5 th in the nation in achievement gains in 4 th grade reading as measured by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). 5 th in the nation in closing the achievement gap in 8 th grade math for children of poverty. 9 th nationally in students passing AP exams (per 100 students). 5 th nationally in 10-year growth of students passing AP exams.

8/27/201538 “Here’s to you educators of Georgia, heroes and heroines in my book, for accomplishing what you have in the face of challenging economic times and with sharp rises in children living in poverty and a whole host of new education initiatives.... [Y]ou are doing an amazing job!” ~ Dr. John Barge
