Statistics from National Research Council & the National Academies Rising Above the Gathering Storm In 2009, 51% of United States patents were awarded to US companies. The United States ranks 27 th among developed nations in proportion of college students receiving undergraduate degrees in math, science, or engineering. Only 15% of US graduate level math and science jobs are filled by United States graduates. On the PISA exam for mathematical proficiency of 15 year-olds, the United States ranked 31 st out of 65 countries tested, and when looking just at mathematics literacy among the top students, the US ranked 28 th.

Focus on numeracy in the early grades Math Standards: Key Points Mastery means multiple representations of understanding and ability to apply it to a novel situation Emphasis on solving real-world problems Move away from a mile-wide, inch deep curriculum to more depth and focus on topics.

PARCC Item Development ITN 3 rd GRADE MATH: Amber didn’t know what 7 X 5 equals, but she knew 5 X 5 = 25 and 2 X 5 = 10. Use drawings, words, and/or equations to explain why Amber can add 25 and 10 to find what 7 X 5 equals. 3 rd GRADE MATH: Amber didn’t know what 7 X 5 equals, but she knew 5 X 5 = 25 and 2 X 5 = 10. Use drawings, words, and/or equations to explain why Amber can add 25 and 10 to find what 7 X 5 equals. 6 th GRADE MATH: What is the value of 3x + y + 3 – 3(x + y) when x = 18.22 and y = -1? Find a value for k and a value for n so that (x – 2)(x – 3) = x 2 + kx + n. 6 th GRADE MATH: What is the value of 3x + y + 3 – 3(x + y) when x = 18.22 and y = -1? What Can Parents Do? Avoid conveying negative attitudes toward math. Ask your child what he/she did in math class today? Ask for details and explanation. Give your child meaningful problems that use numbers and shapes while you are going about everyday life. Ask you child to explain. Expect your child’s homework to include more than simple computation worksheets.
14
What Can Parents Do? Expect some confusions as part of the learning process but emphasize that effort, not ability, is what matters. Math is understandable and can be figured out. Have high expectations. Be an advocate for math proficiency in our schools. Support professional development for teachers and administrators.
