MAP - Making Alignment a Priority for health libraries NW Alignment Toolkit Presenters: Tracey Pratchett, Lis Edwards HLG 19 th July 2010

The Inspiration! 3 ‘northerners’ attended "Making a positive impact on health event” Oct 2008 showcasing the Londonlinks Alignment Toolkit http://www.londonlinks.nhs.uk/resources/alignment -toolkit http://www.londonlinks.nhs.uk/resources/alignment -toolkit Sue Lacey-Bryant & Richard Osborne agreed that we could use the format for our work Original idea to replicate with examples from NW – based on Vital Signs

A call to arms! We had the idea but needed to get others involved Attended LIHNN Primary Care & Clinical Librarians Groups to recruit “Smoke signals form the big smoke!” (2009) – reported back to LIHNN how we were blown away by the initiative 8 librarians from different sectors acute and primary care

The debate! Much discussion about the way forward Decided to facilitate via wiki (PBWorks) Soon became clear that the landscape was changing Other ‘drivers’ beyond Hill, Darzi and Vital Signs We need to speak the same language as commissioners/clinicians Beyond case studies to a MAP of the NHS for library staff

The Vision “The aim of this project is to bring together a number of resources on a wiki environment that can be used by librarians/library managers to ensure that Library services are aligned to drivers at all levels and demonstrating their impact upon their NHS organisation”

A One-stop-shop ‘Drivers’ – snapshot and summary of initiatives impacting on NHS organisations e.g White Paper, Healthier Horizons (NW) Local Service Profiles – a basic planning tool and examples Case Studies – adapted from the Londonlinks template, examples of good practice in NW Impact Toolkit – examples of impact measurement tools from NW & UK

Uses and Benefits Talking the same language as NHS colleagues Protecting & developing library services Recording the impact of one-off projects/ initiatives Practical tools and examples – case studies, LSPs, impact measurement Awareness of the ‘bigger picture’ Sharing good practice within LIHNN – ‘Do once and share’ Anticipating organisational priorities

Toolkit in action! I got access to the wiki last year just to see what this "thingy" was all about and ended up finding the toolkit damned useful! It helped me rationalize and spell out one of the projects I was about to start and to dovetail it with all the local, regional and national drivers which I really had not thought about and defined more clearly till then. The templates and examples were a real boon in helping me produce the project profile. As a by- product, I now see the resultant documentation as evidence of a quality approach to our library business processes. A really good piece of kit - well done to the team. Cheers everyone!

The Successes! Use of a wiki collaborated workspace ‘Buy-in’ from Library Managers Nov 2009 Collaboration between acute, primary care and mental health librarians resulted in a broader view Greater understanding/awareness of NHS context at a crucial time of change Branding development supported by LIHNN/HCLU

The Challenges! Ensuring content is up to date Ongoing process of review and evaluation Moving with the times – changing the key driver content to reflect the current position The wiki – firewalls, managing contributions, changing wiki platform, membership …. Recruiting more Steering Group members!

The way forward Collect NW case studies – workshop Sept 2010 Obtain feedback & evaluation – not just anecdotal but implementation Beyond the Northwest – opening the toolkit up to the health library community
