Context of Townhead Homework Club Townhead –High levels of English as an Additional Language –High levels of income deprivation Started on 18 th November 2014 Response to result of the Referendum on Scottish Independence Initially set up and run by University of Strathclyde B.Ed. 4 Students Pupils from St Mungo’s Primary School

Purpose of Townhead Homework Club 1.To contribute to the community in which the university is located; 2.To enhance the learning opportunities of the children in Townhead; 3.To give Strathclyde students the opportunity to make a difference by using what we are learning on campus in a real context.

Townhead Homework Club volunteers All students from University of Strathclyde Students from all years of undergraduate Primary Education programme Students from across the Humanities and Social Sciences faculty

How Townhead Homework club benefits us, as students. Experience directly relating to teaching Development of more general skills which may help increase our employability

Experience directly relating to teaching Opportunity to put theory learned at university into practice Building up professional experience of children’s learning in an informal context Liaising with other agencies and professionals Provided students with better understanding of the complexities facing teachers working with pupils with English as an Additional Language

General skills to enhance employability Interpersonal and Communication skills Working with public including parents and Village Hall staff Leadership skills Self evaluation and evaluation of others

Thoughts from some of our volunteers “Homework club has been a really good experience for me, as I'm hoping to do a post-grad in Primary Education.” (B.A.4 Psychology) “It has given me the opportunity to get to know the community and taught me new skills that I can carry on and use in the future.” (B.A.1 Primary Education) “It has given me an opportunity to meet other students from different years, sharing experiences and their advice.” (B.A.1 Primary Education) “It helped me to better understand some of the things we had learned about in lectures.” (B.Ed.4 Primary Education)
