7.2 Making Salts What is made when acids and metals react? What is made when alkalis and metals react? 27 August 2015 Bonneville salt flats in America. A dried up salt water lake where some land speed records have been set.

7.2 Making Salts When acids react with a base a neutralisation reaction occurs. It produces a salt and water. Metal + acid also makes a salt and releases hydrogen gas. 27 August 2015 This volcanic lake in New Zealand contains Hydrochloric Acid! pH1. Bases can be added to lakes affected by acid rain to neutralise them.

Acids + Metals Metal + Acid metal salt + Hydrogen Mg (s) + 2HCl (aq) MgCl 2(aq) + H 2(g) Magnesium + Hydrochloric Acid Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen Hydrochloric acid forms a Chloride salt Sulfuric acid forms a Sulfate salt Nitric acid forms a Nitrate salt. 1.Nitric acid + Copper __________ + _______ 2.Sulfuric acid + Sodium ________ + ________

Acid + Insoluble Base Acid + Base salt + water 6HCl (aq) + Fe 2 O 3(s) 2FeCl 3(aq) + 3H 2 O (l) Hydrochloric Acid + Iron (III) Oxide Iron (III) Chloride + water Where does the water come from? What salt is made when sulfuric acid is added to zinc oxide?

Practical 1.Add copper oxide to sulfuric acid. Warm gently on a Bunsen. DO NOT BOIL – Poisonous gases! 2.Filter to remove excess copper oxide. 3.Evaporate to remove water. Write out a word equation to show the reaction. What do the copper sulphate crystals look like? Page 199 Summary questions
