Chelyabinsk Region (Chelyabinskaya oblast) is a federal subject in the Ural Mountains Region, on the border of Europe and Asia. Its administrative centre is the city of Chelybinsk. The main towns are Magnitogorsk, Zlatoust and Miass.

Looking at the map we can easily define 3 climatic zones: mountain-forest, forest-steppe and steppe. mountain-forest forest-steppesteppe

Mountain Forest Zone The climate is cool and wet. Summers are short and cool, but winters are long and snowy. The coldest month is January. The average long-term air temperature of January is -15 - 16 ° C below zero but in some days the temperature can drop to 44-48 ° C below zero. The lowest temperature -52,1°С was registered in January, 1979. It was in Nyazepetrovsk district.

Forest Steppe Zone The climate is warm. Winters are cold and snowy. The district usually averages about 0,3-0,4 m of snow during this entire, 5- month period. Snow storms can drop a foot of snow in a very short period of time. The mean annual precipitation is from 400 mm to 450 mm. The average long-term air temperature of July is from -18 - 19 ° C. The highest point was recorded in 1952 in Yuzhnouralsk, it was 42,0° С above zero.

Steppe Zone The climate is hot and dry. Winters are very cold, frosty and windy with little snow. But snow storms are not rare. The snow season usually begins in November or December and ends in early April. The coldest temperatures are 44-46° С below zero. The mean annual precipitation is from 350 mm to 400 mm.

The winter season usually begins in December and ends in early March. The coldest month is January. The city usually averages about 0,2-0,3 m of snow during this entire, 3-month period. Occasionally, we have snow storms that can drop a foot of snow in a very short period of time. Winter activities during this season include sledding, skiing, skating.

Spring usually arrives in late March, and the temperatures hover around 12-15 degrees during the day. It is a beautiful season because the flowers start to bloom. It is also sometimes windy. People in my city often like to go on picnics, stroll through the parks, and play outdoor games.

Summer starts in June, as temperatures slowly rise to around 25 degrees. The summer in my city is very dry with little rain throughout the season, and temperatures can soar above 34 degrees in August. Fortunately, the weather is very dry with low humidity, so it is pleasant even on hot days. Popular activities during this season are hiking, fishing, camping, sunbathing and outdoor sports including football and volleyball.

Summer changes to autumn in late August or early September when the weather cools off, and the trees begin to change colors. A lot of people enjoy driving into the mountains and viewing the fall colours. It is also a time when people clean up their yards and gardens in preparation for the winter season.
