Explain the process of continental drift and how it has evolutionized our planet.

WWK INFORMATION 1 A link is drawn between two separate phen omena, continental drift, and the expansion of the universe. This link is not an alternative explanation to continental drift but is an attempt to explain why this phenomenon should occur and why all continents were once part of a single continent.

WWK INFORMATION 2 The present theory of continental drift was first proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912. It is thought that all the continents were once joined together in one super-continent, named Pangaea. The rest of the earth was covered with one huge ocean. Pangaea split apart into the major continents we have today. The upwelling material was thought to be a result of convection forces within the earth. This material reached the surface at oceanic ridges and returned to the earth at sub ducting oceanic trenches.

What is Continental Drift theory?
6
The continental drift theory says that all the continents used to be attached in one big continent. Seismic activity caused them to break apart and drift away from one another on the tectonic plates. A map of the world does look like a puzzle...

VOCABULARY Continental Drift- The gradual movement of the continents across the earth’s surface through geological time. Plate tectonics- A theory explaining the structure of the earth’s crust. Divergent Boundaries- Occurs when two plates move apart. Faults- A large fracture in rock along which movement occurs.
