The trad. date for founding of Rome by Romulus = 753BC, however it appears Rome was not truly a city until late 7 th cent. BC. The Cloaca Maxima (the Great Sewer) was built at this time – is still in use today!!!

At first separate villages on hills (esp. Palatine, Quirinal) then join together c. 625BC

Archaeological evidence suggests clearing of old huts, foundation of city late 7 th /early 6 th cent BC – a pebbled forum and carefully laid out sewers have been discovered

Etruscan style tombs, Etruscan bucchero pottery and Greek vases are also found in Rome at this time suggesting trade with the north – or Etruscan domination of Rome?

Writing appears c600BC – Archaic Latin but written in Etruscan alphabet, developed from the Greeks
