Today’s Agenda Return Papers Primary Components of the urinary system –Via video (partial) Kidney Anatomy –External features –Internal features

Work of the Kidneys (video) Listen for the functions of the urinary system

Excretory System Function 1. Collect water and filter body fluids 2. Remove & concentrate wastes to maintain homeostasis Eliminate excretory products from the body

1 = urethra 2 = ureter 3 = bladder 4 = kidney Urine pathway is: 4,2,3,1

1 = ureter 2 = renal pelvis 3 = cortex 4 = medulla 5 = renal pyramid 6 = renal column 7 = renal papillae 8 = renal calyx

Day 2 Go back over the gross antomy of the excretory system Obj. 2 trace flow of blood through excretory (fill in two diagrams in note packet and color the second one showing renal blood vessels) Obj. 3 parts of the nephron Practice obj. 3 Quiz over nephron anatomy (with word bank on board)

Excretion Unit Day 3 While we may not be able to control all that happens to us, we can control what happens inside us. Ben Franklin

Day3 1.Recap and then obj. 5, 6, 7 notes 2.Review the parts of the nephron via group work labeling at lab stations. Complete kidney coloring at lab stations 3.Notes on Objectives 9-12

Adam’s excretion

Blood flows to the kidney to be filtered forming 125 ml of filtrate per minute (48 gallons/day)

Obj. 5, See transparency—filtration, resorption, concentration

Obj. 6 Aldosterone Hormone made by the adrenal gland Causes sodium and water to be resorbed (kept in body) Aldosterone, along with atrial natriuretic factor and antidiuretic hormone regulate sodium and water in the urine.

Obj. 7 Urine Concentration The more water that is excreted, the more dilute the urine will be. Diuretics increase the amount of water in the urine. Diuretics include chemicals such as caffeine and nicotine increase urine output by affecting Na absorption. Alcohol suppresses ADH.

Move to lab area and complete the labeling of the nephron and its associated blood vessels. Turning in one per group…be careful in labeling. Finish coloring kidney if needed.

Composition of plasma, nephric filtrate, and urine (each in g/100 ml of fluid). These are representative values. The values for salts are especially variable, depending on salt and water intake. 28 Obj. 9 Abnormal Urine Components Glucose ---- diabetes Albumin protein---injury or infections White blood cells---infection Red blood cells----infection, trauma Bacteria---infection

Lithotripsy machine to shatter kidney stones with sound waves

Excretion Unit Day 4 Don’t carry a grudge. While you’re carrying the grudge, the other guy’s out dancing. Buddy Hackett

Today’s Agenda Urinalysis prelab –Safety precautions –procedures Urinalysis lab Stop & clean up

Objective 10 URETERS--slender tubes 10-12 inches long convey urine from kidney to bladder. Peristalsis moves the urine

Objective 10 continued Renal calculi or kidney stones may obstruct the ureters.

Objective 11 Urinary Bladder Smooth collapsible, muscular sac. Trigone--outlines the three openings. (2 ureteral, one urethral)

Objective 12: Urethra Thin walled, muscular tube that drains urine from the bladder. (see Diagram)

Objective 4

Uric Acid stone Calcium oxalate & blood Limit stones by drinking water and limiting caffiene
