Chemical Reactions Foldable- pg. 67
3
Making a chemical reaction Obtain the following materials: –Soap, yeast, hydrogen peroxide, a plastic bottle, funnel, and tub Mix the yeast with water and add a few drops of food coloring. Into the bottle, add the hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) Next, add the soap Lastly, add the water and yeast mixture. Stand back and observe.
4
Components of a Chemical Reaction Reactants- shown on the right side of the chemical equation Reaction arrow- shows change between reactants and products Products- shown on left of chemical equation
5
Reactants If the reactants require energy to break bonds, they are called endothermic
6
Products If bonds are created, energy is released creating an exothermic process
7
Catalysts Catalysts are used to speed up chemical processes. If a catalyst is used, it is written above the equation arrow.
8
Writing chemical equations Word equation: –Methane and oxygen yield carbon dioxide and water Molecular model – + + Chemical equation –CH 4 + 2O 2 CO 2 + 2H 2 O
9
Balancing Chemical Equations The number of atoms of each reactant = the number of atoms of each product. –Ex. CH 4 + 2O 2 CO 2 + 2H 2 O –Reactants:Products »C-1C-1 »H-4H-4 »O-4O-4
