Corinthians #5 Proper Worship of the Lord Headship & Hair, chp.11a The Principle of Headship: Everyone must respect their Head. -Christ’s Head is God the Father, v.3 -Man’s Head is Christ, v.3 &-Woman’s Head is Man, v.3 Now, There are practices outlined in the verses following which can disgrace our Head- for both men and women!

Corinthians #5 Proper Worship of the Lord Headship & Hair, chp.11a The Disgracing of our Heads: -Men praying/prophesying w/ something on his head disgraces his Head, v.4 -Women praying/prophesying w/o some- thing on her head disgraces her Head, v.5 Why? -Because God said so, vv.6-12 -Because women with shaved heads were rebellious & disgraceful, v.6 (cf.1Pet.3:4).

Don’t overlook vv.13-15: -It is improper for women to pray uncovered, v.13 -It is dishonorable for men to have long hair, v.14 & -Long hair is given to women for a covering, v.15 Therefore, >Men ought to have short hair or dishonor their Head. >Women ought to have long hair or dishonor their Head.

Corinthians #5 Proper Worship of the Lord The Diversity &Purpose of Gifts, chp.12 The Premise: >They had been led astray to idolatry, v.2 But, >The Spirit leads only to Christ, v.3 How and Why? -He does so by Diversity, vv.4-11. -This diversity has its effect through the various gifts employed by various individual members of the Body for the benefit of all, vv.12-27. -Not all need or possess the same gifts, vv.28-31.

Corinthians #5 Proper Worship of the Lord The Superiority of Love to Gifts, chp.13 The Premise: Love is Superior because without it, Spiritual Gifts do not profit, vv.1-3. But for Love to profit, it must be True Love, which is: >Kind & not Jealous, v.4a >Not bragging & arrogant, v.4b >Becoming: not selfish, provoked, or accounting, v.5 >Rejoices in Truth, not Unrighteousness, v.6 >Bearing, Believing, Hoping, Enduring, v.7 >Never failing, v.8a

Corinthians #5 Proper Worship of the Lord The Superiority of Love to Gifts, chp.13 Love is Superior to Spiritual Gifts because: Spiritual Gifts would cease, v.8b. >>>>“When?” is the logical question.<<<< The answer: when “the perfect comes” to replace the “partial”, vv.9-10. When is/was that? >What Paul then calls “now” was partial knowledge & dimness during the time of Spiritual Gifts, vv.9,12. >But with the fullness and light of the completed revelation of the Gospel came the end of Spiritual Gifts, Jas.1:25; 2Pet.1:3; 2Tim.3:15-16.

Corinthians #5 Proper Worship of the Lord The Proper Exercise of the Gifts, chp.14 Key to this chapter & the previous: Prophesying is the most beneficial Gift, vv.1-12. Why? >Tongues speak to God- not men, v.2 >But Prophesying edifies, exhorts, and consoles men, v.3 >Tongues edify only the speaker, v.4a >But Prophecy edifies the church, v.4b >Tongues, without interpretation, profits nothing, vv.5-11 >But Prophesying is for the edifying of the Church by itself, v.12!

Corinthians #5 Proper Worship of the Lord The Proper Exercise of the Gifts, chp.14 So then, what Rules should govern Spiritual Gifts in the Assembly of the Saints? >Don’t speak in tongues w/o an Interpreter, vv.13ff. Why? vv.13-26 >At the most 3 should speak in turn, v.27 >Again, don’t speak w/o an interpreter, v.28 >2 or 3 Prophesy & others confirm, v.29 >Keep order, vv.30-33 >Women not permitted to speak, vv.34-37 >The spiritual know the value of order, vv.38- 40

Corinthians #5 Proper Worship of the Lord Conclusions: Take Home Points: 1. Understand your place in God’s order of Headship and honor Him by respecting it, chp.11a. 2. Keep the Lord’s Supper holy by discerning Christ’s Body through taking it together and for the right reason, chp.11b. 3. Understand the diversity of Gifts within the Lord’s Church and fulfill yours! chp.12 4. Practice the Superior Gift of Love in all its applications, chp.13. 5. Keep the Order of the Assembly that it may fulfill its God-given purposes to our benefit, chp.14.
