3 What does the word “Renaissance” mean? -“Rebirth” Where did the Renaissance begin? -Italy Who were considered the Renaissance “greats”? -Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael What kinds of improvements were made during the Renaissance? -Art, literature, and technology How did the printing press affect Europe ? -More people learned to read and write.

19 What is a ruler with complete authority over the government and the lives of the people? -an Absolute Monarch Define the Divine Right of Kings. -the belief that the absolute monarchs were given complete authority by God. What did King Louis XIV build outside of Paris? -Versailles Who was Napoleon? -The famous army officer who became the Emperor of France.

20 The Industrial Revolution

21 Define the following terms. Factory:-a place where workers and machines are brought together to produce goods. Communism:-form of socialism advocated by Karl Marx. According to Marx, class struggle was inevitable and would lead to the creation of a classless society in which all wealth and property would be owned by the community as a whole.

22 Socialism:-System in which the people as a whole rather than private individuals own all property and operate all businesses. Laissez-Faire:-(“Hands-off”) The belief that government should not interfere with business/private enterprise. Utilitarianism:-The idea that the goal of society should be to bring about the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.

23 Assembly Line:-The production method that breaks down a complex job into a series of smaller tasks. Corporation:-A business owned by many investors who buy shares of stock and risk only the amount of their investment. By 1900, what countries were the world’s leading industrial nations? -Germany and the United States

24 The Big Ideas: Short Answer Responses Directions: Choose three of the following options to reflect on your study and understanding of World History, from the Renaissance through the Industrial Revolution. Explain what the “big idea” means and how it applies to a historical event/era that we’ve studied this semester.

25 What do you think? – Apply it! Big Idea 1: Conflict is inherent in the nature of human beings Big Idea Option 2: The earth is a global community where the actions of one country can affect lives in other countries. Big Idea Option 3: Perspective is Everything: whose history is it? Big Idea Option 4: The past drives the present and the future Big Idea Option 5: Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Big Idea Option 6: There are credible and questionable sources of information about history and contemporary events.
