3 Soil and Water Conservation Soil Conservationist – Works with land owners & users in selecting the best land practices Soil Scientist – Studies the composition, fertility, and structure of soil Soil & Water Engineer – Designs systems to control soil erosion and water pollution Soil Physicist – Studies processes in the soil Water Quality Technician – Collects and analyzes information about water Civil Engineer – Plans and supervises the construction of large buildings, bridges, and tunnels

4 Air Quality Air Quality Technician – Gathers information about the air Air Quality Engineer – Studies, designs, installs, and works to assure air quality

5 Solid Waste Management Operator of Solid Waste Disposal Equipment – Operates heavy equipment to dispose of solid waste

6 Wastewater Management and Treatment Wastewater Treatment Technician – Insures that water is properly treated Portable Sanitation Technician – Involves locating portable toilets to areas where restrooms are unavailable

7 Hazardous Materials Haz-mat Team Chief – In charge of the operation of a hazardous materials emergency response unit Organic Chemist – Studies the chemistry of living or formerly living things

8 Forestry & Horticulture Forester – Works with tress and resources associated with forest production – Enjoys harvesting lumber and operating tree farms Environmental Horticulturalist – Directly involves forestry and horticulture – Uses plants to improve surroundings

9 Wildlife and Endangered Species Protection Naturalist – Studies nature and conducts education programs for people Fishery Biologist – Studies fish – Develops ways to raise them in captivity or in their habitat Exotic Animal Technician – Enjoys feeding animals and cleaning their living areas Wildlife Enforcement Officer – Insures wildlife protection and enforces gaming laws

10 Mineral and Fossil Fuel Extraction Involves mining fossil fuels and preparing them for use as heating oil Mining equipment operator uses heavy equipment to move ore for refining

11 Recycling and Composting Recycling Center Operator – In charge of a recycling center Composting Technician – Receives compost materials and processes it

12 Weather and Climate Cartographer – Gathers environmental data and prepares maps and charts Meteorologist – Studies weather and climate information

13 Education and Communication Nature Area Tour Guide – Enjoys working with people and explaining scenery to tourists Agricultural Education Teacher – Prepares students for careers in the natural sciences and agriculture industry

14 General Skills Needed Many jobs require training and education in various sciences. Most jobs require a desire to work outdoors. Many jobs require someone to be neat, organized and pay attention to detail. Most jobs require direct contact with soil, water, trees, plants, animals, and weather. Many jobs require being able to interact well with people. Many jobs require someone to have a good aptitude for operating machines, or technical support. Communication skills are generally useful in most jobs.

15 Ways Environmental & Natural Resources are important to the economy. Protects the soil, water and air enabling humans to live properly and grow food. Disposes of and recycles waste in a way that minimizes negative impact on our environment. Manages hazardous materials during their flow through our environment an protects us in case of an accident. Provides for forest plant production, which improves air quality for humans.

Protects plants and animals Provides animal life for continued food and recreation for humans Provides information to society about our climate and weather Educates our society in order that people learn to appreciate and protect our environment and natural resources
