Andrew Johnson had remained in the Senate as a pro-Union Southern Democrat. As part of the plan to assassinate Pres. Lincoln co-conspirator George Atzerodt had been assigned the task of killing Andrew Johnson, but lost his nerve. So Johnson survived the assassination and succeeded Pres. Lincoln on April 15 th 1865.
