4. Why? Assist in financing your education. – One of the number one barriers to post-secondary education is money. Recognition for involvement, excellence, passion and community service.

7. Money you won’t need to pay back!  Scholarships: A non-repayable sum of money awarded to a student to help finance further education. Based on merit in areas ranging from academic achievement, hobbies, specific talents to athletics to name a few.  Bursaries: Awarded primarily based on financial need, but academic achievement is also considered.  Awards: Given in recognition of outstanding achievement (ex: certificates, plaques, books)

10. SKILLS: The most important thing to always remember is that if you don’t apply, you won’t receive anything. Getting Started 1.Start now 2.Use at least 3 – 4 sources for scholarships (refer to booklet) 3.Start a binder or folder to keep track of them 4.Locate application forms (always print off two) 5.PROOFREADERS! 6.Deadlines non-negotiable Once you find awards: Pay attention to DETAILS Update and review portfolio (hard copy and career cruising) Include extra-curricular and community involvement; statement of education and career goals; transcripts; personal accomplishments; letter of reference from all areas of life)

15. CANLEARN – Student Loans http://www.canlearn.ca/eng/index.shtml Student Loans – It’s not just a loan! Students who apply are automatically considered for 3 forms of financial assistance. In addition to student loans, Saskatchewan’s Student Financial Assistance program offers a range of non-repayable grants and bursaries for learners. There’s money for school that students won’t need to pay back-ever. Last year 65% of all provincial assistance provided to learners was non-repayable.
