ACT English Section By Marcus Russell and Emily Higgins

The Basics ●75 Questions; 45 Minutes; ~35 seconds/question ●Tests Usage/Mechanics and Rhetorical Skills ●5 passages ●NEVER LEAVE AN ANSWER BLANK!!!!! ●Timing is crucial; watch your time!

Easy Tips ●1) Read the WHOLE sentence before you answer o Showing only PART of sentence:  her dogs has sleek, brown hair ●a) NO CHANGE ●b) are ●c) have ●d) do not have o Showing ENTIRE sentence:  The girl walking her dogs has sleek, brown hair ●a) NO CHANGE ●b) are ●c) have ●d) do not have

Easy Tips Cont. ●2) The questions ARE NOT ordered by level of difficulty; ANSWER THE QUESTIONS IN ORDER o When you skip around with questions, you tend to make more bubbling mistakes when trying to record your answers. Just stay in order. It’ll make more sense

Easy Tips...still cont. ●3) Use that good old process of elimination; it’ll save you so many wrong answers ●4) Don’t be afraid of guessing. You aren’t penalized for a guess. Just try it!

Easy Tips...yea there’s a lot ●5) Don’t let the choices throw you off o The infamous NO CHANGE answer is there to confuse you. If you think there’s a change, follow your gut and do it. Your gut is more often than not CORRECT. Have faith in yourself! :)

More Easy Tips….. ●6) NO CHANGE; it might be the answer. Just because there are choices of changes to make doesn’t mean that the changes are needed in that sentence. Some sentences are great without a change. Watch for it! ●7) Magic word: HOWEVER; No one knows why, but the ACT creators really like the word “however”, so if you see it as an answer choice watch out; it won’t always be right but it might be.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS OF THE ENGLISH SECTION!!!!! 1.OMIT: A fancy, English way of saying delete a.If a sentence is a repeat of the sentence before it, then OMIT IT!!! It’ll be an answer option. Look for it. 2.Comprehension a.Some of the passages will ask you questions about the context of the passage as a whole. Therefore, ACTUALLY READ THE PASSAGE. Don’t just search for the questions, read the passage!! 3.WATCH YOUR TIME!!!! a.If you are down to 2 minutes, just start bubbling in. Make every bubble in EVERY section filled out!! b.WEAR A WATCH!! i.Don’t expect a clock in the room; be proactive and wear a watch

Enjoy the English Section! Good luck!!! :) AND REMEMBER...
