 Osteoarthritis  Rheumatoid Arthritis  Gout  JRA  Psoriatic arthritis

 Degenerative joint disease  Affects 27 million Americans  Occurs most often in the knees, hips, and hands  “Wear and Tear”  Age is related to increased risk of OA www.arthrtis.org

 Cartilage is the firm, rubbery tissue that cushions your bones at the joints, and allows bones to glide over one another.  Cartilage can break down and wear away. As a result, the bones rub together, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.  Bony spurs or extra bone may form around the joint, and the ligaments and muscles around the hip become weaker and stiffer. Pubmed.com

 Age Wear and tear  Muscle weakness If muscles surrounding joint are weak, increases risk of stress  Obesity (increased stress on joints) For every one pound of body weight gained, you add four pounds of pressure on your knees and hips  Injury or Overuse Repetitive motion www.arthritis.org

 Pain and stiffness in the joints- worse with exercise or when placing weight or pressure on the joint  Rubbing, grating or crackling sound when you move the joint  Mourning stiffness  Joint swelling  Limited range of motion  Tenderness

 Exercise Swimming, walking, and cycling 30 minutes of exercise five times a week Start slow and increase by no more then 10 percent each week

 Maintain a healthy body weight Reduces stress on joints Exercise combined with a healthy diet

 Chiropractic Care Joint Manipulation  Increase range of motion  Restore normal movement  Relax muscles  Improve joint coordination  Reduce pain Rehabilitation  Muscle strength/ endurance  Joint stabilization

 Nutritional supplements Bromelain, 250 mg twice a day  Reduces inflammation and promotes tissue healing Omega-3 fatty acids  Reduces joint inflammation Glucosamine/ Chondroitin 500-1,500mg/Day (Elations)  Reduces joint swelling and stiffness

 NSAIDS- can cause decreased repair and rebuilding within the joint (www.alleghenyhealth.com)  Tylenol (Acetomenaphen) FDA reports in 2009, number one leading cause of acute liver failure (http://www.medscape.org/viewarticle/518380 )  NSAIDS- common side effects include gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding Kill 16,500 people each year from side effects (www.naturalnews.com)

 Managing your osteoarthritis through the combination of exercise, diet, and manipulation is proven to be extremely effective
