2 Long Term Goal Obtain $100 million in externally funded research expenditures within a reasonable period.

3 Overview of Research and Sponsored Projects Total Active Awards (8/04): All Sources: $175.1 Million – Federal: ~87% (NSF, DoEd, EPA, NASA, DOC, DOE, DOD, etc) – State:~2% – Private Sector:~10%

4 Research Efforts—Where We Are: FY2003 - $32.7 million Fifth Largest Federal Research Activity in Texas among Public, Academic Institutions of Higher Education Highest ratio of State return – 4.65— among top 20 Public Research Institutions

8 Washington Advisory Group, WAG Report WAG hired by UT System to evaluate UTEP, UTD, UT Arlington and UT San Antonio  $100 million research goal. UTEP Strengths: – Ability to attract federal funding (2 nd in UT System; 5 th in State) – Strong research base with quality faculty. UTEP Challenges: – Additional doctoral programs needed (for instance, Physics and Chemistry) – Competitive vs. set-aside research funding – New sources of funding—foundations, private sector, etc Recommendations: – Develop new strategic research plan – More faculty (~300!) – Additional PhD programs – Higher investment by State to Research Infrastructure

9 Research Task Force Goals Respond to the recommendations in the Washington Advisory Group (WAG) report, divided into two major Subcommittees: – Strategic Research Directions (Roadmap to Research-Extensive and Top-Tier Status); – Research Enhancement Mechanisms and Strategies (Organizations/Policies/Procedures).
