T HE S TRUGGLE TO R ATIFY What day is known as Constitution Day? September 17 th How many of the 13 states were needed to ratify the Constitution? 9 What would adding a Bill of Rights to the Constitution do? It would protect the rights of the people

V OTE OF APPROVAL What rights and freedoms did the Anti- federalists want in the Bill of Rights? Freedom of religion, freedom of expression and to live as one chooses. What was the 9 th state to ratify the Constitution? New Hampshire The ten amendments protecting the rights of the people are called the Bill of Rights and became part of the Constitution in 1791.

T HE B ILL OF R IGHTS The 1 st amendment gives people the right to follow any religion or none at all. The 2 nd amendment protects people’s right to have weapons. The 3 rd amendment states the government can’t make people house soldiers in peacetime. The 4 th Amendment protects people against unfair searches The 5 th -8 th Amendments deal with due process of law- meaning people have right to a fair trial. The 9 th Amendment states people have other rights not listed in the Constitution. The 10 th Amendment states the government can only do the things listed in the Constitution.

T HE N EW G OVERNMENT Who was the Nation’s first president and vice president? George Washington and John Adams What did Hamilton and Jefferson (members of Washington’s cabinet) disagree about? How strong the central government should be. What was an important result of their disagreement? The formation of political parties Why do you think it was necessary for the President to have a cabinet? He needs people to help him keep informed and to carry out his job.
