2 History Today 2012 Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. becomes The UPS Store, Inc. Locally owned an operated, offering a variety of services with convenient locations and world-class service. 2003 The two companies introduce The UPS Store Brand and approximately 3,000 Mail Boxes Etc. locations are re-branded as The UPS Store. They also offer lower UPS-direct shipping rates. Integrity, Reliability, employee ownership and customer service 1907 Jim Casey started the American Messenger Company to deliver private messages; Slogan: Best service lowest rates” since the beginning 1913 The company focuses on package delivery for retail stores; largest client is the USPS; starts using automobiles; merges with Evert McCabe and renames company Merchants Parcel Delivery 1919 first expansion to oakland, CA and changed name to United Parcel Service 1922 Differentiates with Common carrier services 1924 First Conveyor belt system 1930 Expanded to East coast Continued to grow through WWII in retail delivery 1950s expanded services to private and commercial by acquiring “common carrier” rights 1953 Expand common carrier services outside of California & successfully implement air delivery operations in major cities 1975 the Interstate Commerce Commission granted UPS the authorizations to ship freely in all 48 contiguous states, and it became the first package delivery company to serve every address in the 48 contiguous United States. Known as the “Golden Link” 1978 UPS Blue Label Air became available in every state including Alaska and Hawaii 1980s UPS enters the overnight air delivery business 1985 Next Day air service is available in all 48 contiguous states and Puerto Rico. UPS enters International air package and document service connecting the US and 6 European countries 1988 UPS Airlines is formed with authorization of the Federal Aviation Administration. The fastest growing airline in FAA history 1990s UPS develops the handheld Delivery Information Acquisition Device that every driver carries 1992 UPS starts tracking all ground packages 1994 UPS.com goes live 1995 UPS allows customers to track packages through its website; forms UPS Logistics Group to provide global supply chain management solutions and consulting; acquires SonicAir making UPS the first company to offer same-day, “next flight out” service and guaranteed 8 am overnight delivery 1998 UPS Capital was founded to provide integrated financial products and services that enable companies to grow in their business 1999 UPS enters stock market with IPO 2001 UPS acquires Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. the worlds largest franchisor of retail shipping, postal and business service centers. locations of Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. have been rebranded as The UPS Store and offer lower UPS-direct shipping rate; publishes first corporate sustainability report, but has been making efforts since the 1930s 2005 UPS launches first non-stop delivery service between the US and Guangzhou, China; UPS acquires interest held by its joint venture business partner in China, giving it access to 23 cities that cover more than 80% of the country’s international trade. Today UPS delivers to more than 185 countries and can reach more than 4 billion people – twice as many as any telephone network. We have acquired more than 40 companies including industry leaders in trucking and air freight, retail shipping and business services, customs brokerage, finance and international trade services, which has expanded the horizon of our capabilities. 2001 UPS acquires Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. 1980 Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. is introduced as an alternative to the post office.
