Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Previous Curriculum Review
7
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Curriculum Review: Skin Physiology The skin can be divided into two main sections: Dermis Epidermis Beneath these is the hypodermis. The epidermis is differentiated into five horizontal layers: Stratum basale Stratum spinosum Stratum granulosum Stratum lucidum Stratum corneum Epidermis Dermis Hypodermis Sebaceous Gland Hair Follicle Sweat Gland Blood Vessels Fat Cells Muscle
8
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Curriculum Review: Skin Physiology In between the keratinocytes (skin cells) in the stratum corneum are epidermal lipids (ceramides, fatty acids and lipids) that act as a cement (or mortar) between the skin cells (bricks). Stratum Corneum
9
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Curriculum Review: Skin Physiology Moisture Barrier: This combination of keratinocytes with interspersed epidermal lipids (brick and mortar) forms a waterproof moisture barrier that minimizes transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and keep moisture within the skin. The composition of these lipids in the moisture barrier is broken down into ceramides (40%), fatty acids (25%), and cholesterol (25%).
10
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Curriculum Review: Skin Physiology The moisture barrier protects against invading microorganisms, chemical irritants, and allergens. If the integrity of the moisture barrier is compromised by harsh environmental conditions or poor skin care, the skin will become vulnerable to dryness, itching, redness, stinging, and many other skin care concerns.

Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Introduction
13
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Hydrate—a basic need for healthy skin Hydrating the skin with lipids and vital skin components is a basic need for soft, healthy looking skin, and is key to maintaining skin health.
14
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Hydrate—a basic need for healthy skin The stratum corneum is the body’s first defense against harsh external elements. It protects against UV radiation, pollution, and other damaging elements. The stratum corneum also keeps life sustaining moisture inside the body so cells and tissues can maintain homeostasis (equilibrium). The protective properties of the stratum corneum are attributed to the moisture barrier. Stratum Corneum can be referred to as the Moisture Barrier
15
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Hydrate—a basic need for healthy skin Throughout the day, many factors contribute to the constant attacks on the moisture barrier: Sun and wind exposure Dry air and extreme temperatures Pollution and allergens Forced heat or air conditioning Stress and hormones Poor diet and intrinsic aging
16
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Hydrate—a basic need for healthy skin The skin must repair damaged cells and replace lost fatty acids, lipids, and humectants in order to maintain the healthy function of the moisture barrier.
17
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Hydrate—a basic need for healthy skin Many moisturizers on the market contain filler ingredients such as mineral oil, petrolatum, beeswax, and lanolin that are not compatible with the skin’s natural lipids and fatty acids. They tend to sit on top of the skin, where they impede proper function and can leave a greasy film that attracts dirt, pollutants, and allergens.
18
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Hydrate—a basic need for healthy skin Nutricentials ™ moisturizers contain skin beneficial ingredients that promote the healthy function of the moisture barrier. Formulated with humectants and emollients containing essential fatty acids that mimic the skin’s natural oils, Nutricentials ™ moisturizers are able to fortify the protective moisture barrier and provide key components for repair.

26
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Key Benefits Supported a) Optimizes your skin’s nighttime repair process for noticeably soft, youthful looking skin. Night Supply ™ Nourishing Cream and Lotion are formulated with patented phosphatidylcholine and other ingredients that provide the skin with the necessary building blocks to help repair damaged skin and replace fatty acids and lipids lost throughout the day.
27
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Key Benefits Supported b) Fortify cellular membranes to help increase resiliency and flexibility. Cell membranes—composed of a double layer of phospholipids— become rigid and lose their resilience as they are exposed to environmental aggressors. Patented phosphatidylcholine, in both Night Supply ™ Nourishing Cream and Lotion, is able to replace and reinforce damaged phospholipids to help increase resiliency and flexibility.
28
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Key Benefits and Ingredients Supported c) Advanced formula in Nourishing Cream provides thorough hydration to quench dry skin. The high fatty acid content in both macadamia nut oil and shea butter allow quick assimilation into the skin, reinforcing the protective properties of the moisture barrier.
29
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Key Benefits and Ingredients Supported d) Light, silky formula in Nourishing Lotion provides hydration without the heavy feel typical of nighttime lotions. Moisture binding humectants sodium PCA, panthenol, and glycerin bind to water and hold it to the skin. Humectants allow the formula to deliver lightweight moisturization for combination to oily skin and do not leave a heavy after feel.

37
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Key Benefits and Ingredients Supported
38
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Key Benefits Supported a) Protects against moisture loss. The health of keratinocytes (skin cells), fatty acids, and lipids within the moisture barrier determine the skin’s ability to protect against moisture loss. Intensive Eye Complex contains brown seaweed with eight amino acids to fortify the important proteins within the keratinocytes, while essential fatty acids within the advanced barrier repair technology help strengthen the moisture barrier.
39
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Key Benefits Supported b) Promotes cellular respiration for a youthful look. With aging and stress, the cellular respiration becomes less efficient, weakening the skin and causing further aging. Coastal marine fennel is known to promote healthy cell respiration.
40
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Key Benefits Supported c) Soothes and moisturizes the delicate skin around the eye area. The skin around the eye is the thinnest of the entire body (0.2 mm compared to the soles of the feet 6.0 mm). This makes the skin more vulnerable to degradation and irritation. Brown seaweed, marine coastal fennel, and essential fatty acids in the advanced barrier repair technology help to support and maintain the integrity of the moisture barrier and soothe the delicate skin under the eyes.
41
Nutrition from the Outside In Hydrate Key Benefits Supported d) Is absorbed quickly. The moisturizing components in Intensive Eye Complex are similar to the lipids and fatty acids within the skin. Parallel structures allow these moisturizing ingredients to quickly be absorbed and integrated into the skin, avoiding the greasy feel of most eye creams.
42
