12 Page 12 Particular Challenge: Make cartographic data, visual analysis, and decision support available and manageable for expert and non expert cartographers Cope with it by Very appealing and intuitive user interfaces!! Incorporating knowledge into the software A thematic mapping knowledge base automatically selects those presentations that are „valid“ for the selected variables. Further guidance is provided by an extension of the knowledge base that takes into account the current task/goal of the analysis (which may include automatic data transformations, e.g. from absolute to relative values).

13 Page 13 Projects GIMMI 03/2002 - 09/2004 Major goals: CommonGIS-based portal for European water quality management, particularly pesticide impact assessment Issues: heterogeneous and distributed resources, temporal analysis, integration with simulation, legacy, and workflow software, e-commerce and brokerage, mobile access Geographic Information and Mathematical Models Inter-operability TXT e-Solutions SpA, Milano Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft des Saarlandes, Environmental Informatics Group, Saarbrücken University of Rome "La Sapienza", Laboratorio di Sistemi Informativi Territoriali ed Ambientali Ente Regionale per lo Sviluppo Agricolo della Lombardia Ministry of Agriculture in Catalonia National Meteorological and Hydrological Service of Ecuador
