2 Why was Multiculturalism introduced? Why was Multiculturalism Introduced? Some saw it As a means Of preventing Americanisation Of Aust. Ïf you can’t Beat them, Join them Forced on The Aust Govt By the reality Of modern Australia policies of integration and assimilation had failed

3 Why did assimilation & integration fail? Large scale non-British immigration after 1945 Efforts to make Greeks & Italians become British failed and ethnic ghettos were established, holding onto their language, food, music, religion and customs End of White Australia Policy mean more non-Europeans were coming to Australia

4 Acceptance of Multiculturalism An act of humanitarianism because of the SE Asian refugee crisis Australia’s military presence in the Vietnam war left them with an obligation to assist in the crisis Australia took about 80,000 Vietnamese, Lao and Cambodian refugees

5 Benefits of Multiculturalism Talents from the various ethnic groups Fostering migration from many sources to add to our pool of talented people Recently more Asian migrants have arrived from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sth Korea, PRC Some of these have arrived under the business migrants plan Some have come to further their education Some left Hong Kong because of their fear of communism

6 Influence of Multiculturalism Changes in education Culinary tastes Language Religion Changing media Cultural diversity Wider choice of curriculum in schools Foreign languages are taught in every school Food of almost every nation on earth can be eaten in our cities Rice, pasta, and spices are as much a part of the Australian diet as “meat & 2 veg” in the 1950s & 1960s People now speak up to 150 non-indigenous languages in Australia Ethnic press produce a wide range of foreign language newspapers SBS radio & TV provide many foreign language programs Ethnic film festivals are now part of the Australian calendar Foreign films, music & theatre are now available

7 Food This is one of the most noticeable influenced from multiculturalism People can now go to restaurants and eat food from every Asian country – Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Cambodian, Malaysian, and Indonesian restaurants TV cooking shows and magazines are full of Asian cooking recipes and their food is often shown as being a healthier alternative to some Western foods

8 Leisure and Health Karate Tai Chi Yoga Judo Aikido Chinese medicine Shiatsu Meditation Acupuncture Karaoke singing Asian cultures have influenced our lives profoundly in the areas of Leisure and Health

9 Impact of Multiculturalism Not all Australians have embraced it Opponents say Australia is losing its national identity Gallipoli & Kokoda mean nothing to the new generation Parts of Australia have been transformed into foreign areas – e.g. Cabramatta There is Asian and Middle Eastern gang culture World events have made people suspicious of Islamic Australians Allows for people to have divided loyalties Unemployment is highest in ethnic enclaves

10 One Nation Anti-migrant feelings were brought into media attention with the rise of the One Nation party and Pauline Hanson in the 1990s
