2 Meet the Teacher Mrs. Trudi Hendricks Personal Philosophy Classes – Homeroom Class – Mrs, Jones’s Class

3 Daily Schedule 7:50-8:15 Enrichment Time 8:25-9:10 Music or PE 9:15-10:15 Power Hour 10:15-12:15 AM Class 12:15-1:00 Lunch/Recess 1:00-3:00 PM Class 3:00 Dismissal Time

4 Special Classes Students will visit four special classes each week. Our schedule is as follows: Monday – P.E. and Library Tuesday – Music and Art (Mrs. Jones) Wednesday – P.E. at end of day Thursday – P.E. Friday – Music and Art (Mrs. Hendricks) * On P.E. days please make sure your child wears tennis shoes and dresses appropriately

5 Power Hour All students spend this time participating either in small teacher-led groups or working independently on different activities. Mrs. Hendricks – Reading Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Lewis – Math Independent Activities – computer work, reading, writing, math warm-ups, research, projects, etc.

6 Reading Reading Workshop Short lessons to model reading comprehension strategies are a daily part of the workshop. Students read and work on week’s assignments independently or with a partner. Share Time

11 Writing Writing Workshop We write daily. Mini lessons help students perfect their craft and understand skills needed to improve their writing. Students work on self-selected topics as the teacher conferences individually with some students and works with others in small writing groups. Share Time

12 Word Study Spelling Individualized lists come home Monday. Help your child copy the new spelling words into his agenda. Spelling tests are on Friday. Buddy Spelling is used. Tests are in Spelling Notebook that you will see on Monday nights.

13 Word Study Grammar and Mechanics Students must be able to use parts of speech, punctuate, and write sentences correctly to be effective writers. Grammar section in back of spelling notebook. Students will learn, then apply principles and rules.

18 Homework Homework for the week is assigned on Monday. All work is due on Friday. Spelling Test every Friday 100 minutes of reading logged in agenda – checked on Friday HOMEWORKOPOLY reward for doing all homework for the week.

21 Assessments STAAR Tests In 5 th grade, Math and Reading must be passed for student to be promoted to 6 th grade. Math – April 1 (Tues.) Reading – April 2 (Wed.) Science – April 23 (Wed.)

23 Attendance If absent, written note within 5 days to be considered excused. Unexcused absences – no more than 10 days or parts of days in 6 month period – or 3 days or parts of days in 4 week period 18 or more days per year – attendance record is evaluated by committee Please plan doctor appointments to be at different times of day. Keep early dismissal to a minimum – especially on Fridays.

24 Electronics Students may not bring electronics to school. Cell phones must be turned off and put away at school and on school buses. ** Special electronics privileges may be earned as class reward.
