History & Purpose of UBMS HISTORY 1964: Federal TRiO Programs created out of Economic Opportunity Act 1990: UBMS Program initiated to address the need for specific instruction in the fields of Math and Science - Source: U.S. Department of Education PURPOSE To provide high school participants with the skills and motivation necessary for success in programs of postsecondary education that lead to careers in the fields of Math and Science - Source: U.S. Department of Education

Goals & Objectives Increased Academic Performance / Grade Point Average (GPA) Increased Academic Performance on Standardized Tests Secondary School Retention and Graduation, including completion of a rigorous program of study Postsecondary Enrollment immediately after high school Postsecondary Completion

Why Go To College? To gain knowledge that will be helpful throughout life; To broaden perspectives, meet new people from diverse backgrounds, and learn to be independent; and To have job opportunities with better working conditions and more promotion opportunities, as well as a higher annual salary and better lifetime earning potential.

Services Through after school activities, Saturday sessions, and a 6-week summer program, participants receive: Tutoring and academic instruction; Academic advising; SAT/ACT preparation; College visits; Assistance with completion of college admissions applications and with locating and applying for scholarships; Information on and assistance applying for federal financial aid; Financial literacy education; Career exploration; Activities with professional mathematicians and scientists and hands-on instruction in laboratories; Mentoring by undergraduate and graduate Math and Science majors; and Cultural enrichment activities.

Eligibility & How To Apply ELIGIBILITY Students must attend a Harnett County High School and At least one of the following criteria must be met: ▫1) Neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree or ▫2) Family income meets federal guidelines for eligibility HOW TO APPLY Complete UBMS application and return to the UBMS Office at CCCC or your school’s Guidance Office QUESTIONS?
