INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
LESSON 1
2
IT TERMS & DEFINITIONS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY- the use of technology (hardware & software) to perform data processing tasks (input data, store, protect, process, transmit, output, and retrieve information)from anywhere, anytime. COMPUTER-An electronic device used to input, output, process and store data. HARDWARE- All the physical components of a computer system SOFTWARE- the programs (written instructions) that tell the computer what to do (perform tasks)
3
IT TERMS & DEFINITIONS GIGO- Garbage In Garbage Out (is a term used to state whatever is put into a computer, that’s exactly what will be processed and output. PERIPHERAL- All the external hardware components that are connected and controlled by the CPU (Central Processing Unit). DATA- All raw facts and figures that are entered into the computer to be processed
4
IT TERMS & DEFINITIONS INFORMATION- processed data that is in a useful form INPUT DEVICE- a device that is used to enter data into the computer. OUTPUT DEVICE- a device that is used to display/output information from the computer. STORAGE DEVICE- is a device that is used to save/store data.
5
This is known as the Data Processing Cycle
What do we know so far? A computer is made up of hardware and software. Hardware & Software is needed to process data There are THREE main stages involved in processing data to get information. They are: INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT This is known as the Data Processing Cycle
6
The Four Main Function of a Computer System
The computer uses Input devices to enter (input) the data in the CPU The Central Processing Unit (CPU) processes the data The Output device displays/outputs the information from the CPU The information can also be stored on a storage medium
7
Home-Work Using the four steps listed above draw a simple diagram showing the flow of data. * Review Work for next day
