3 Narrative Poetry Tells a story. Has characters, setting, and a plot. The Raven Once upon a midnight dreary, While I pondered weak and weary… “The Raven” tells a story – it has a setting, plot and characters (the speaker and a raven). 3

4 Ballad From “The Dying Cowboy” Let sixteen gamblers come handle my coffin, Let sixteen young cowboys come sing me a song, Take me to the green valley and lay the sod o’er me, For I’m a poor cowboy and I know I’ve done wrong. A song or songlike poem Tells a story About lost love, betrayal or death (usually) Can be sad or humorous Uses simple, folksy language Uses lots of repetition

14 Rhythm or Meter Pattern of beats or a series of stressed and unstressed syllables in poem. Poets create rhythm by using words in which parts are emphasized or not emphasized.
