2 Social Studies Curriculum Updates Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for grades 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12: FULL IMPLEMENTATION FOR 2011-2012  Pacing Guides Available on District’s SS Website  CBC for Grades K-3 and 6  Scope and Sequence Plans: available on the District’s Social Studies Website  http://socialsciences.dadeschools.net http://socialsciences.dadeschools.net  2012-2013: NGSSS-SS Full Implementation K-12

3 Textbook Adoption Updates Florida Department of Education- will publish list of state adopted textbooks. District Committees- MAY be formed this fall. May have to prioritize which grade levels get new textbooks first. Priority MAY be given to 6, 7, and 11. Secondary Priority MAY be given to K-3.

4 Florida State Mandates African-American History Hispanic Contributions to U.S. History Women’s Contributions to U.S. History Holocaust Education Character Education

6 Online Courses Will be posted on the Social Sciences Website. African-American History Modules Power Point on infusing African-American History also available on social studies website.

7 7 th Grade End of Course Exam in Civics Timeline: 2012-2013- Field Test 2013-2014- 30% of the student’s final course grade 2014-2015- student must earn a passing score on the EOC in order to receive course credit. Bottom Line: 2010-2011 4 th graders- when they reach 7 th grade- 30% rule; 2010-2011 3 rd graders- when they reach 7 th grade- passing score rule to receive credit for the course.

8 Regarding Cognitive Complexity Cognitive Complexity Breakdown Development of the Civics items by Cognitive Complexity will be spread out as noted below based on the recommendations of the Civics Content Advisory Committee: Content Low Moderate High Civics 15-% - 25% 45% - 65% 15% - 25%

Once edited, other lesson plans will be posted here as well.

20 Instructional Minutes in Social Studies According to M-DCPS Student Progression Plan for 2010-2011: Grades: K-1: 60 minutes per week of social science instruction; Grades: 2-5: 120 minutes per week of social sciences instruction. 2011-2012 required minutes of social studies instructions- to be determined.

21 Class Size Amendment Update Specific Language from the Law: Core-Curricula Courses Means: A) Courses in language arts/reading, mathematics, social studies, and sciences in prekindergarten through grade 3; B) Courses in grades 4 through 8 in subjects that are measured by state assessment at any grade level and courses required for middle school promotion. Social Studies Grades 4 and 5 also included on this list- MUST ADHERE TO CLASS SIZE STIPULATIONS.
