5 RIT History RIT is privately endowed, coeducational university with nine colleges and institutes emphasizing career education and experiential learning. 1829  RIT traces its roots back to 1829, as the Rochester Athenaeum, a reading society. 1891  The Athenaeum merged with the Rochester Mechanics Institute (founded 1885) in 1891. 1940’s  Renamed the Rochester Institute of Technology in the 1940s. 1966  RIT chosen for site of National Technical Institute for the Deaf 1968  RIT moves to Henrietta campus
