2 OVERVIEW Why college courses now? Difference between Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses General Studies Diploma through Paul D. Camp Community College Hear representatives from Paul D. Camp Community College, The Pruden Center, The Governor’s School for the Arts, Virtual Virginia

3 Why College Now? To earn college credits now Have more productive junior/senior years Reduce amount of college tuition for families

4 Early College Scholars “Senior Year Plus” Have a “B” average or better to apply Pursue an Advanced Studies Diploma Earn at least 15 transferable college credits while earning a “C” or better in each college level course Be accepted by a college or university If completed, earn Governor’s certificate of recognition

5 Advanced Placement Courses Taught by trained high school instructors No tuition Students must meet pre-requisites Students encouraged to take national standardized test in the spring To receive college credit must achieve minimum passing score on AP exam AP exam fee: $87.00 Registration Process

6 Advanced Placement Courses AP Biology with Lab AP Calculus AP Chemistry with Lab AP Environmental Science with Lab AP Language and Composition (11 th -12 th grade) AP Literature and Composition (12 th grade) AP Government AP Statistics AP Virginia/U.S. History AP Spanish NOTE: Courses are not guaranteed. Courses are offered based on number of student requests and teacher availability

7 AP Scholar Awards The AP Scholar recognition is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on 3 or more AP exams AP Scholar with Honor Average score of 3.5 & scores of 3 or higher on 5 or more exams AP Scholar with Distinction Average score of 3.5 & scores of 3 or higher on 5 or more exams State AP Scholar One male and female student with scores of 3 or higher on greatest number of exams National AP Scholar Scores 4 on all AP exams and scores 4 or higher on 5 or more exams *Recognition determined by the College Board More information available online: www.collegeboard.com

8 Dual Credit Courses Enrolled through Paul D. Camp Community College or Tidewater Community College Complete electronic college application Passing scores on Compass Test To be scheduled at the individual high schools Pay tuition – each semester Earn college credit at completion of the course with a grade of “C” or better Failure to abide by requirements will result in course being deleted from student schedule Withdrawals from DC courses follow the withdrawal deadlines of the community college. Any withdrawals after that will result in a failing grade for the year.

9 Dual Credit Courses DC English DC Introduction to Psychology DC Pre-calculus DC Calculus DC Microcomputers DC Biology DC U.S. History DC Western Civilization DC Sign Language Geospatial Technology (GIS) Modeling & Simulation Support Specialist I & II DC Software Design/Gaming & Simulation (through Tidewater Community College) DC Teachers for Tomorrow

10 Dual Credit- Pruden Center Geospatial Technology- 1 year course (3 cr hrs) TCC tuition cost is subsidized by 40% Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Interests in cartography, mapping, engineering, land surveying Modeling & Simulation Support Specialist I & II 2 year course (15 cr hrs) Gaming technology Problem solving Data analysis and basic programming

11 DC Software Design Will be held at Tri-City Education Center in northern Suffolk Will be bused to the center, block 7 every other day and placed in a study hall when not in the class Return in time to ride 4 PM activities Bus Usually the class meets according to SPS calendar

12 Options Available Through Paul D. Camp Community College General Studies Associate Degree College course work starts the summer after 9 th grade General Studies Certificate Details provided by the Paul D.
