Differentiating Indiana Academic Standards October 28, 2014 www.pcgeducation.com
3
How do you define…
4
Differentiation Providing instruction that starts where the kids are. Differentiated instruction is “responsive teaching” rather than “one-size-fits-all” teaching. Teacher proactively plans varied approaches and supports based on student need.. (Tomlinson, 2003)
5
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Framework that can turn challenges into opportunities to maximize learning for every student. When education fails, the curriculum, not the learner should take the responsibility for adaptation.” (Rose & Meyer, 2002) Differentiation is just one component of UDL

7 Differentiation means teachers…
8
8 Listen to audio recordings instead of reading text. Learn content from audiobooks, movies, videos and digital media instead of reading print versions Work with fewer items per page or line and/or materials in a larger print size Have a designated reader Hear instructions orally Record a lesson, instead of taking notes Have another student share class notes with him Be given an outline of a lesson Use visual presentations of verbal material, such as word webs and visual organizers Be given a written list of instructions
9
9 Give responses in a form (oral or written) that’s easier for student Dictate answers to a scribe Capture responses on an audio recorder Use a spelling dictionary or electronic spell-checker Use a word processor to type notes or give responses in class Use a calculator or table of “math facts” Provide alternate projects that demonstrate understanding of concept
10
10 Increase individual choice Plan activities and instruction that is relevant and has value to student Reduce distractions that do not add to the instruction and activities that are threatening Vary levels of challenge and support Provide opportunities for collaboration Engage students in individual and group goal setting
