Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program MRSA: What Is It? MRSA is a “Staph” infection It does not respond to some antibiotics It is Treatable Like other infections, this can become serious if left untreated Severe infections can be prevented by following proper hygiene and early detection

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program MRSA: What Does It Look Like? Mild infections may look like a pimple or boil and can be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage and are usually mildly infectious and easily treated. More serious infections may cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections, or surgical wound infections.

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program MRSA: What Are We Doing? FCPS Certified Athletic Trainers provide information to all athletes specific to MRSA during the athlete meetings at the beginning of each season. Included in this session: – View a DVD specific to MRSA – Prevention strategies for staph and other communicable diseases. – Importance of proper personal hygiene and clothes washing. – Importance of bringing all questionable lesions to the attention of the certified athletic trainer immediately.

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program MRSA: What Are We Doing? All athletes will view a video that specifically outlines concerns about MRSA. The FCPS Athletic Training Program includes the use of a cleansing product for wound care that contains 4% w/v chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) which specifically targets MRSA and provides a continuous action to kill MRSA on contact for 6 hours.

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program Any Virus

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program Rehabilitation Rehabilitation and reconditioning is a primary role of the Certified Athletic Trainers We have the tools and time to work with your athlete Every injury requires some form of rehabilitation

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program Return To Play A Parent, Coach, Family Physician, Athlete, Administrator, ATC, or Team Physician can exclude an athlete from participation. All of these individuals must agree that the athlete can and should play The role of the Athletic Trainer is to make sure your athlete is safe to return to play.

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program Nutrition Make NUTRITION a priority Disordered eating vs. eating disorder Proper Hydration is essential There is no quick fix… real food is far better than any pill or supplement Dangers of Nutritional Supplements

Oakton H.S. Athletic Training Program Concussions A concussions is an injury to the brain Concussions can alter a student’s ability to learn Concussions can be life threatening Signs & Symptoms include : Headache, confusion, dizziness, change in personality, difficulty sleeping, difficulty concentrating, loss of appetite, loss of memory, and others. Treatment is REST and hydration

What Is ImPACT? – Web Based Concussion Management Tool – www.impacttest.com Why Are We Using It? – It is a tool that can help us identify if the brain has recovered to a point that the athlete is safe to begin to return to sport. – It also helps us with the progression for full safe return to sport.

Speaking about communication… Be mindful of what you or your children are Communicating online – Tweeting – Facebook – Instagram Unfortunately some students have gotten in trouble for comments that are meant in jest but can be interpreted more seriously.

Sportsmanship Sportsmanship is all inclusive – athletes, coaches, parents, students and fans are expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times We ALL represent Oakton Do not condone improper language or behavior Treat all opponents, teammates, coaches and officials with respect

Thoughts for PARENTS Encourage your child to participate for the enjoyment of athletics Commitment to the program / team – Support the Program Communication – We do not discuss playing time / strategy / play calling / other student – athletes – Any athlete concerns must first be addressed by the player to the coach

Thoughts for PARENTS Release them to the Game Many times parents want to be the problem solver because they find it painful to watch their children find their own solutions – Those can be strong learning opportunities for your children Their will be difficult times After a contest – Give your child time and space – Let them come to you – be a reflective listener – Keep corrections and criticisms to a minimum, they will hear it from a coach

Be Involved More and more research is showing benefits of being a multisport athlete –So be involved in more than one activity Overtraining of Young Athletes has become a large issue http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v= zSRga0c7Z3c&vq=mediumhttp://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v= zSRga0c7Z3c&vq=medium

College Sports Information: From Dr. Greg Dale, Duke University Sport Psychologist: Scholarships are very rare – 95% of athletes will not receive one. – 65% of college athletes are non Division 1 Your athlete has a better chance of getting an academic scholarship.
