2
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine He says: “I’m the Father of Medicine” He says: “Prove it!”
3
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Welcome to the show. Today we’ve got possibly one of the Grooviest Greeks of all time with us here. Hippo… Hippopotamus, no I mean Hippocrates! So why don’t you kick us off by telling us a little about yourself
4
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Thank you for inviting me on your show Jerry. Well where do I begin? [Fill in the rest of this slide by describing Hippocrates’ background: When did he live What period of our development study is he from You can list some of his achievements and beliefs but don’t go into too much detail just yet.
5
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Yeah Ok, I’ll admit that sounds pretty impressive. But you Ancient Greeks you all have some pretty weird ideas about what causes disease. Tell us a little about these things… what are they called? Asclepions?
6
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer Hmmm… I’m not a huge fan of them myself Jerry, but basically.. [describe why some Ancient Greeks visited Asclepions, and what they believed happened to them there to make them better]
7
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine So wait… some of you ancient Greeks believe that by visiting an Asclepion you can actually get better? That sounds just crazy to me, I mean being visited by a God and his daughters and having snakes do all sorts of mumbo-jumbo on you… You don’t really expect us to believe that makes you the “Father of Medicine”?
8
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine No Jerry I don’t believe that a God makes people better at an Asclepion. But think about this… [Describe the facilities available at the asclepia and how a stay there might make some one feel better]
9
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Yeah well, when you put it like that I can see how staying at one of these places could improve peoples’ health and well being. Kinda like a visit to a health spa really. OK then, if you don’t believe in these supernatural causes of disease – then what do you and your followers believe causes sickness?
10
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Ah now, I’m glad you asked about that… [Use this slide to describe the four humours theory: explain how the theory works and why the ancient Greek doctors believed it was the real answer to the question about what caused people to be ill]
11
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine So what you’re saying is that you and your hippocratic doctors just see a patient and immediately start messing around with their humors? That’s enough to make anyone bad humoured!
12
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Don’t be a fool man! I encouage all doctors to.. [describe the Hippoctatic/Greek approach to treating patients. Make sure you include the importance of care observation and recording of patient notes before making a diagnosis]
13
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine So really what you’re saying is that you have strict ideas on not only what causes illness or on how to treat illness but you also have ideas on how doctors should act?
14
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Oh yes Jerry. Doctors are very privlegded people and I believe we doctors have aduty to preform. [complete this slide by describing the Hippocratic oath]
15
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Gee! I bet you are one popular guy!
16
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Well actually my ideas and teachings have been well recieved. [complete this slide by giving examples that suggest Hippocrates’ work was popular for a long time. You might want to include: The hippocratic collection of books The fact the his ideas and the Theory of 4 humours were in use for 2000 years The fact that Doctors in 2007 still swear to abide by Hippocrates’ standards]
17
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Well I hate to burst your bubble Hippo, you don’t mind if call you Hippo right? But this crazy idea that the body is made up of four humours, which are in turn linked to the four elements and seasons is just plain crazy. How can you be “the Father of Medicine” if your ideas about the causes of disease are wrong?
18
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine You’re kind of missing the point. You see before I came along … [Explain how, although the theory is incorrect, it was still an important advance in the development of health and medicine
19
Hippocrates vs Jerry Springer GCSE History Medicine Through Time: Greek Medicine Springer’s Final Thought Use this slide to summarise Greek medicine and the work of Hippocrates, then decide if Jerry agrees that Hippocrates deserves the title “Father of medicine”
