Clones What is a clone? Do we need clones?

Cloning often appears in Sci-fi films. People think that it is scary! They think that it is about creating hundreds of identical people as an ‘army’.

Cloned cats – what do you notice? They are not just ‘the same’. They are GENETICALLY IDENTICAL – they have identical genes to each other.

These cats have been c………….. This means that they are g………….. ……………. to each other. They all have exactly the same g…………..

The puppy is a clone of the big dog. What does this mean? How would you ‘make’ the puppy? Does the puppy have a mum and dad? Why would you want to make a clone of the big dog?

The Siberian tiger is nearly extinct. What does this mean? Where do you find most Siberian tigers now?

Why might it be a good idea to clone tigers?

I bet this man wishes he had a clone! Why? KEY IDEA There would be no rejection of the new cloned heart

What do you think about this idea? ETHICS – thinking about something as being right or wrong.

Cloning Cloning is an example of a…………. Reproduction. Cloning is producing another organism that is g………… i………… to another. Clones have the same g………. as each other. Identical twins are c……….. of one another. There are many other examples of cloning that happen naturally by a…………reproduction: –Strawberry plants –Greenfly –Spider plants Copy this info ; KEY IDEA = Cloning produces genetically identical individuals

Advantages of cloning –We can ‘grow’ new organs which won’t get r…………….. Spare organs can be grown for tr…………… Children can donate to siblings e.g. bone marrow –Protection for animals and plants at the risk of ex…………. –Allows couples to have a child where one parent has a serious genetic illness. –We can produce lots more f……… by cloning. Disadvantages of cloning -There is no v…………. This means that a disease that kills one will kill them all. -Some people think that it is e…………… wrong to clone humans. END

1.What is a clone?2 Give an example of an animal that reproduces sexually. 3. Give an example of an animal that reproduces asexually. 4.Give an example of a plant that reproduces asexually 5. Name one advantage of cloning. 6. Name one disadvantage of cloning. 7. What does the word ‘ETHICS’ mean? 8. Name an item of food that is already produced by cloning. 9. What does it mean when we say that a person ‘REJECTED’ a transplanted heart?
