Cell Organelles LS 2a – I will understand cell structure and organelles
2
Cell Membrane Function: Found In: Plant and Animal Cells
To keep all of the cells organelles inside. To allow things in and out of the cell. Found In: Plant and Animal Cells
3
Cytoplasm Function: To surround and suspend all of the organelles within a cell. Found In: Plant and Animal Cells
4
Ribosomes Function: It’s the protein factory Very small organelle
Found In: Plant and Animal Cells
5
Nucleus Function: “The control center of the cell.” It tells the cell what to do. Stores DNA which contains the information the cell needs to make proteins Found In: Plants and Animal Cells
6
Mitochondria Function: To break down food particles in order to release energy (ATP). Known as the “MIGHTY MITOCHONDRIA” Found In: Plant and Animal Cells
7
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function: Is the delivery system of the cell. Internal delivery Similar to a “tunnel for cars” Found In: Plants and Animal Cells
8
Golgi Complex Function: Processes and Transports Materials out of the cell. External Delivery Lipids and Proteins from the ER are delivered to the Golgi. Found In: Plants and Animal Cells
9
Vacuole Animals – Small vacuoles
Function: To store water and other materials. This “water balloon” helps to give the cell its support. Found In: Plants – LARGE vacuoles Animals – Small vacuoles
10
Cell Wall Function: To provide strength and support to the cell membrane. Found In: Plant Cells Only
11
Chloroplast Function: -- Take energy from sunlight and turn it into sugar (sugar is then passed to the mitochondria to get energy – ATP) Found In: Plant Cells Only
12
The Cell Theory All organisms are composed of one or more cells.
The cell is the basic unit of life. All cells come from existing cells.
13
(1) Prokaryotic Cells (Bacteria)
14
(2) Control Center? No Nucleus
Genetic Information (dna) is “bunched up” in the cytoplasm
15
(3) Organelles Organelles are not surrounded by any membranes
They do have RIBOSOMES though!
16
(4) Genetic Information DNA is circular
A long molecule, shaped like a rubber band
17
(5) Type of Cells? Bacteria!
18
(6) Eukaryotic Cells (plants and animals)
19
(7) Control Center Nucleus is in the center of the cell
Controls all cell activities Easy to see!
20
(8) Organelles Surrounded by membranes
You can distinguish them from each other Separate structures
21
(9) Genetic Information DNA is linear It is stored in the nucleus
22
(10) Type of Cells? Anything But Bacteria! Plants and animals!
23
staphylococcus
