4 4 A link to complete an electronic survey was sent out to the MIT Sloan student body. –The survey was open from April 2 – 15, 2008. –Two reminder emails went out on April 8 April 15 A total of 376 surveys were filled out during the fielding period (236 completed and 140 partial).

6 6 Green Business Movement 93% of students agree that the green business movement provides an opportunity to create new jobs, services, and products. % Agree n = 297

7 7 Guidelines on Green / Sustainable Business Three out of four agree that clearer guidelines should be implemented. % Agree n = 283

8 8 Factors on Determining if a Company is Green About 60% strongly agree that the company’s own practices determine if the company is green / sustainable. % Agree n = 271

9 9 Most Important Factor on Determining if a Company is Green The most important factor for students is the company’s business practice. % % n = 267 %

10 10 Environmental Responsibility in the Bottom Line The percent of students doubles in agreement that a company will need to build responsibility into its bottom line to be successful. % Agree n = 257 TodayFuture

14 14 Close to 60% of students that have secured a job agree that a company’s environmental record and/or it’s commitment to sustainable business practices did not factor into his/her decision about the position. % Agree I have secured a job offer n = 139

19 19 Household Products 45% strongly agree that he/she prefer to purchase environmentally friendly products. % Agree n = 242

20 20 Gauging Environmental Friendliness The top three ways that students gauge whether or not the product is environmentally friendly are by recyclable contents, product labeling, and reputation of the company that makes it. % n = 241 %

21 21 Recycling The majority of students never bring their own bags to the supermarket. n = 241

22 22 Commuting Nearly half of students commute to campus via public transportation. n = 241

23 23 Paying More 3 in 4 students are willing to pay more if a product contains all natural ingredients. % Yes n = 240

24 24 Switching Brands % Yes Over 50% of students have switched brands in the last six months for a product that contains all natural ingredients. n = 240

25 25 Graduation Pledge 73% of students are unaware of what the MIT Sloan Graduation Pledge is. n = 240

26 26 Student Status Nearly half of the students that completed the survey were first-year MBA /LFM/ SDM students. n = 240
