5 Graduation Requirements- continued Subject to Change per State Law Students must earn 18 points on seven end-of- course exams in order to graduate. **These tests replace the OGT test for the Class of 2018 and beyond** End of Course exams will be given for - English 9 & 10 - Algebra 1 & Geometry - Biology - U.S. History & U.S. Government Students can earn from 1-5 points for each exam, based on their performance. (5-Advanced, 4-Accelerated, 3-Proficient, 2-Basic, 1-Limited)

6 Earning High School Credits Credits are earned each semester 1.0 Credit for full-year courses 0.5 Credit for one-semester courses EXCEPTION Physical Education =0.25 credit per semester Must earn 4 credits to reach 10 th grade status

7 Grades & G.P.A. Semester Grades are Recorded on the Transcript (Your academic Record) A semester grade is comprised of two quarters and the semester exam. GPA is important for Post-High School Plans F’s earn no credit and are NEVER removed from the student’s transcript More information available on the website or in the student planner.

13 World Language, Fine Art, and/or Business Requirement A student must complete one credit from one of the academic areas above in order to graduate. The 1.0 credit can be a combination of a half credit from 2 different areas.

14 Physical Education/Health Physical Education ½ credit required, 2 semesters to graduate Foundation of Physical Activity – to be taken 9 th grade year Remaining.25 credit to be taken 10 th -12 th grades Students who participate in SHS Sports, Marching Band or Cheerleading, may be eligible for PE Waiver, waiving the P.E. Requirement. You must fill out the application. Credit Flex may be substituted for the PE course. Health – To be taken 9 th Grade Year Required Course (#000911) – ½ Credit

15 World Language Options: French 1 German I Spanish I 2 years of a World Language is recommended for College Entrance Students who struggle with reading may struggle in these courses.

19 Pre-Engineering (Project Lead the Way) INTRODUCTION TO PRE-ENGINEERING DESIGN (IED) – Year 1 –Co-requisites: Algebra I, a lab fee will be charged –This course uses a design development process while enriching problem-solving skills; students create and analyze models using specialized computer software. Pathway to Pre-engineering is a four-year course of study integrated into the students’ core curriculum. Combination of traditional math and science courses with innovative Pathway to Pre-Engineering courses prepares students for college major in engineering fields. Offers the the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. Courses engage students through a combination of activities-based, project-based, and problem-based learning.

20 Honors Courses The Honors Student: Does extra reading…thoroughly answers essay questions…fully participates in class discussions…does all homework…willingly does research…commits to spending time in challenging courses Students may change levels within the first 3 days of the semester, with parent permission. Beyond this, changes must be teacher-initiated and only for students who are struggling with D’s or F’s Will have required summer readings and/or projects

21 P.E. Waiver A way to complete one’s Physical Education requirement. Students receive no credit and no grade. Student may waive P.E. requirement by completing two full seasons of SHS athletics, cheerleading or marching band. Physical Education Waiver Application and more information can be found on the SHS Guidance Website. Students may not mix P.E. Waiver with Physical Education classes to meet the requirement. Must have 2 waivers or 2 courses, not one of each.

22 Credit Flexibility Credit Flexibility allows students to earn credit by demonstrating academic and skill level performance through a variety of educational options. Approved credit awarded through these guidelines will be posted on a student’s transcript and counted as required graduation credit in the related subject area or as an elective. A student must complete the Credit Flexibility Application and obtain approval PRIOR to beginning the coursework. See the SHS Guidance website for more information and the Application

25 Athletic Eligibility All incoming 9 th graders must pass a minimum of 5 classes during the 4 th quarter of the 8 th grade year If a student earns less than 2.0 GPA during the 4 th quarter of the 8 th grade year, student will be put on an Academic contract At SHS, must pass 5 classes (not including P.E.) the quarter preceding the season FALL SPORTS: CROSS-COUNTRY, SOCCER, FOOTBALL, GOLF, VOLLEYBALL, GIRLS TENNIS

26 CCP College Credit Plus Get high school and college credit at the same time Students must apply and be accepted by the Institution of Higher Learning ( requires specific GPA and Placement Test score) Both student and parent MUST attend mandatory meeting on February 11 th or 12 th at 6:00 P.M. in the SHS Auditorium

27 Hints for Parents Support Student’s use of Planner Check the PASS Program Establish regular time and place for Homework Check for teacher websites Students MUST become “Active Studiers”… 1. “Reading Over Notes” does NOT work 2. Must make note cards or flashcards 3. Review often and out loud 4. Make Lists of materials to review 5. Moving around while studying can help

28 Things to remember when selecting courses: The high school has an 8 period day Select English, math, science, & social studies 5 class periods minimum (Not including P.E.) Lunch for one period Electives Maximum of 7 classes Teacher recommendations are the best guide to choosing the right courses

29 Scheduling Do’s & Don’ts: DO look at YOUR History DON’T select courses based on friends DO look at your ability – realistically DON’T select “easy” courses DO look at your future plans DON’T expect to be able to easily change your electives next year

30 Keys to a Successful Year… Write down all assignments and tests (planner) Study/review daily (notecards for vocab) Complete all assignments Take notes Check for teacher websites Ask for help from parents, teachers, friends Plan for tests and projects
