The Issue 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before their 18 th birthday (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006) 93% of children know their abusers (Snyder, 2000) Most child victims never report the abuse (Smith et al., 2000; Broman- Fulks et al., 2007) Reported cases of CSA cost $35 billion annually in the US (www.ncjrs.gov/pdfiles/victcost.pdf) Social outcomes: teen pregnancy, depression, suicide, academic failure, substance abuse. What We Know There are people in our midst that would rob our children of their innocence and they are people we know and trust Child safety is the job of an adult Child sexual abuse is preventable through awareness and education The fight against abuse has to be a collaborative effort 5

Growth and momentum since 2009 - 56 Y Associations - 150 Ys in some phase of exploring/planning - 430 facilitators within Y networks - State Alliance commitment from NH, DE, PA, and NJ Expansion beyond eastern states More than 10,000 trained by YMCAs in the past year Initial goal of training 5% of adults in Y service area 10

Darkness to Light To empower people to prevent child sexual abuse Raise awareness of the prevalence and consequences of child sexual abuse by educating adults about the steps they can take to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse Working with organizations across the country to help build community prevention initiatives 12

Stewards of Children 2.5 hour video-based, facilitator led or online curriculum Shares life experiences from survivors and experts Teaches adults to think and to act on their feet to protect children Evidence based - Increases knowledge & awareness - Changes child protective behavior 13

Getting Started – Local Level Familiarize key staff and board with the program Convene and recruit community leaders and partners Build training capacity - Train trainers, purchase materials - Appoint staff person to coordinate efforts Implement training program community wide Report and track progress Local level examples - Merrimack Valley YMCA - Newport County YMCA 14

Getting Started – State Alliance Initiate a planning call Convene alliance for an introductory presentation Y CEOs to introduce staff and board to the program Create a Planning Task Force Hold a series of workshops to train instructors throughout the state Coordinate at the local level 15
