Lesson 4: Plotting Points on a Grid
2
What Are Ordered Pairs??? Two numbers – X and Y Components Show POSITION on a grid (4,3) (2,7) etc. First # shows “X” position – Horizontal Distance 2 nd # “Y” position – Vertical Distance ALWAYS write the x before the y!!!
3
Where Have You Used Grids Before? GPS Systems Maps Battleship??? - Use Co-ordinates to find other ships to destroy!!! - Letter and # position (ordered pairs) ex) A,7 - Letter and # instead of two #s
4
Some Other Key Terms Plot - To locate and draw on a co-ordinate grid Origin - The starting point of a grid (more later) Vertex - An endpoint on an object (ex: A square has 4)
5
Origin of a Grid (0,0) Where the “X” and “Y” axis CROSS OVER
6
Some Things to Remember… When a number has 0 as one of its co- ordinates, it will lie ON THE AXIS - ex) 4,0 0,4 Sometimes a letter on a grid can represent an ordered pair - A “J” can represent (3,4) on a grid
7
What is a Line Segment? Connects TWO POINTS on a grid
8
What is the Distance Between Each Point? Along the X-axis? Along the Y-axis? * Hint: Count the “jumps” between each space
9
In Your Math Journals… Using words, numbers and/or pictures, how do you use ordered pairs to describe and locate points on a grid?
10
GAMES TIME!!! Cartesian Plane Bingo!!! Choose 5 ordered pairs to plot on your grid - If all of your pairs are called, you win a prize!!! - Your co-ordinates can go from 0-4
11
Cartesian Plane Twister!!! Co-ordinates range from 0-7 - I (or sir) will pick an ordered pair for you - You will spin the spinner and whatever body part it lands on, that’s what body part you put on the grid
