PPE Personal Protective Equipment An Introduction
2
Introduction to Personal Protective Equipments
Module 1 Introduction to Personal Protective Equipments
3
Course Objectives: At the end of this course, participants should be able to: Know what is PPE Usage of PPE Steps in choosing PPE Understand employees/employers responsibilities
4
PPE Includes all clothing and accessories designed to create a barrier against workplace hazards.
5
PPE PPE is defined in the Regulations as ‘all equipment (including clothing affording protection against the weather) which is intended to be worn or held by a person at work and which protects him against one or more risks to his health or safety e.g. safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses.
6
PPE “ Standard “ The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's regulation, 29 CFR , which requires that employers must establish and administer an effective personal protective equipment (PPE) program for employees.
7
PPE Past Present People use PPE to protect themselves while they work:
8
PPE Usage Samples Eyes / Face
Safety spectacles, goggles, face shields, visors. Hands / Arms Gloves, gauntlets, mitts, wrist cuffs, armlets Head A range of helmets and bump caps. Feet / Legs Safety boots and shoes with protective toe caps and penetration-Resistant mid-sole, gaiters, leggings, spats. Breathing Disposable filtering face piece or respirator, half- or full-face respirators, air-fed helmets, breathing apparatus. Body Conventional or disposable overalls, boiler suits, specialist protective clothing, e.g. chain-mail aprons, high-visibility clothing.
9
The last form of defense from exposure
PPE’s based on the hierarchy of control measures : Emergency Response The last form of defense from exposure Personal Protective Equipments Administrative Controls PPE is the last form of defense. It does not eliminate the hazards, it only prevents or minimize the effect of hazards. Engineering Controls
10
It is used in conjunction with engineering and administrative controls
PPE Why Use PPE ? It is used in conjunction with engineering and administrative controls For Protection
11
PPE PPE must be provided when necessary because hazards present in the workplace are capable of causing injury or impairment Use of PPE does not eliminate the hazard so if the equipment fails then exposure occurs
12
PPE Steps an employer/employee needs to perform: Hazard Assessment
Selection of PPE Provision of PPE Training Maintenance Evaluation Record Keeping
13
PPE Hazard Assessment The person responsible must assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present that requires the use of PPE
14
PPE Hazard Assessment Hazard Risk Assessment determines the risk of:
Eyes Face Head/Ears Body/Respiratory system Foot / Legs Arms/ Hands
15
HAZARDS PPE Health Physical Sources: chemical exposure falling objects
light radiation electrical floor conditions mechanical extreme temperatures chemical exposure nuclear radiation harmful dust/ particulates
16
PPE Hazard Type Examples Common related tasks Impact
Flying objects such as large chips, fragments, particles, sand, and dirt. Chipping, grinding, machining, masonry work, wood working, sawing, drilling, riveting, sanding, etc. Heat Anything emitting extreme heat. Furnace operations, pouring, casting, hot dipping, welding, etc. Chemicals Splash, fumes, vapors, and irritating mists. Acid and chemical handling, degreasing, plating, and working with blood. Dust Harmful dust. Woodworking, buffing, and general dusty conditions. Optical Radiation Radiant energy, glare, and intense light Welding, torch-cutting, -brazing, soldering, and laser work.
17
PPE Selection - PPE must be :
Provide adequate protection against the particular hazards for which they are designed [ (a)(6)]; Be of safe design and construction for the work to be performed [ (c)]; Be reasonably comfortable [ (a)(6)(ii)]; Fit snugly and shall not unduly interfere with the movements of the wearer [ (a)(6)(iii)]; Be durable [ (a)(6)(iv)]; Be capable of being disinfected [ (a)(6)(v)]; Be easily cleanable [ (a)(6)(vi)]; Be distinctly marked [ (a)(4), (a)(7)]
18
PPE Provision of PPE PPE is provided by employer / supervisor
If performing activity and you do not have PPE, contact supervisor for PPE’s prior to starting the activity. Employee may be responsible for lost or damaged PPE;s
19
PPE PPE Training (f), Employees shall be trained to know at least the following: When PPE is necessary What PPE is necessary How to properly don, doff, adjust, and wear PPE The limitations of the PPE The proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of the PPE
20
PPE Retraining is required, but not limited to, the following situations: Changes in the workplace Changes in the types of PPE to be used Inadequacies in an affected employee’s knowledge or use of assigned PPE indicate that the employee has not retained the requisite understanding or skill
21
PPE PPE Care, Maintenance, Storage & Disposal
Always check PPE for damage before and after you use it Clean PPE before storing Dispose of and replace damaged PPE Properly store PPE and avoid conditions that could damage it, such as heat, light, moisture, etc.
22
PPE Some limitations of PPE’s
Ear muffs with cracked, cut or missing gaskets reduce your protection Dirty or scratched eyewear could limit your vision Suspension on hard hats may have loosen or torn cradles Un-fit PPE may lead you to harm
23
PPE Evaluation of PPE’s Performance
Effectiveness of PPE used is analyzed based on the exposure and effect of identified hazards on employees
24
PPE Record Keeping Records on PPE like, history, usage, disposal, type and other related records must be kept for TRACKING any changes and/or for future reference
25
PPE Employees Responsibility
Employees must use PPE in accordance with training, instructions and requirement of the job Employees must use alternative PPE if existing PPE is not recommended due to incompatibility. (The job must be modified to eliminate the hazard requiring PPE or the employee must change jobs) Employees cannot sign waiver and accept risk of injury Employees shall not place other employees in an unprotected hazardous situation PPE is provided to protect employee and is not intended as an inconvenience
26
PPE Employer’s Responsibility
The employer SHALL ensure that employees are provided and use appropriate personal protective equipment when they are exposed to hazards requiring their use Use of PPE shall be incorporated into employee work plans and will be enforced as any other key responsibility/dimension including disciplinary action
27
Points to Remember PPE must be used correctly to protect you.
PPE is designed for YOUR benefit. For your sake and your family’s, learn how to use PPE To Exams Next Module
