2 In order to enroll in your classes with confidence, you will need to complete the following 5 steps:  Identify your academic goal  Understand your placement test results  Learn to read the Schedule of Classes  Select your classes, and  Register for classes

3 Academic Goals  No matter what your major is, AHC offers a variety of educational programs and transfer opportunities to fit your goal.  Many students start off at AHC with no idea what to major in, what college or university to transfer to, or even if they want to transfer at all.  What’s most important is to get off to a good start by scheduling the right classes your first semester.

5 Variety of academic goals  Transfer to a 4-year school  Transfer to a 4-year school with an associate’s degree  Earn an associate degree  Earn a certificate  Upgrade job skills

6 Planning  It could take you approximately 2 years to either earn an associate’s degree and/or to transfer to a 4-year school, depending on…  your assessment test results in English and math  the amount of units you take each semester, and  your major requirements

7 Planning 21 units = General Education classes 18-35+ units = Major classes 4+ units = Elective classes 60 units = Total

8 General Education Pattern  There are 3 general education patterns to follow. Depending on your educational goal will determine which pattern you should complete… AHC GE Pattern CSU GE Pattern IGETC Pattern

9 Assessment  All of you have already completed the START assessment. Your placement scores represent the recommended levels of reading, writing and math.  It is strongly advised to take these courses right away.

12 When selecting classes for your first semester, there are several things to think about. Consider these:  The number of units you can realistically complete  Your English and reading placement  Your math placement  Major requirements  General education (GE) requirements  Course prerequisites, corequisites, advisories, and Course prerequisites, corequisites, advisories  Electives *It’s important to strike a balance between all of these areas when scheduling.

13 Need to know…  Prerequisite  A course that needs to be completed with a “C” or better prior to enrolling in a more advanced course.  Corequisite  A course that must be taken prior to or at the same time the student is enrolling in the desired course.  Advisory  A course that a student is encouraged, but not required, to take before enrolling a more advanced course.

16 Don’t Forget…  Apply for the BOG at the Financial Aid Office located in Building A.  Complete the FAFSA on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov www.fafsa.ed.gov Remember Once you register, pay for your classes right away or you will be dropped.

17 Register!  The next step will be to register through your myHancock student portal account.
